Poetry Project

What you will need to hand in:

1. Rubric (on the back of this sheet)

2. Three or four typed final drafts of poems (each poem a minimum of 15 lines; Haiku and Limericks cannot be used for a final draft)

3. A typed analysis of your poetry (one paragraph for each poem)

4. Drafts of six different poems (some of these can be the rough drafts of your final pieces; four Haiku or two Limericks count as one draft)

Final Drafts:

Within your three or four final pieces, you must use an example of each of the following:

1. simile or metaphor

2. personification

3. imagery

4. alliteration

5. rhyme or free verse

6. three “other hints” from your Toolbox

You will need to identify by underlining or highlighting your use of each of these poetic devices in your poems (for those that apply). It is very likely that you will use some of these more than once in your poems. Choose the best example to highlight or underline.

Analysis:

On a separate paper, I would like you to write an analysis of each poem where you describe how you used each poetic device or “other hint” and why it meets the criteria for that device. You should write one paragraph for each poem.

Here are questions to consider for each poem’s analysis:

1. What poetic devices/“other hints” did you use in this poem?

2. How did you use these poetic devices/“other hints” in this poem?

3. How do your examples meet the criteria for the poetic device/other hint?

In addition, you will choose one of your final draft pieces to share at a class poetry reading, which will be held on the due date of the project.
