Plan for ‘Shooting Stars’ and ‘Visiting Hour’ essays using the questions below:

1. Choose a poem in which the poet explores one of the following emotions: grief, happiness, love, alienation.

Discuss how the poet’s exploration of the emotion has deepened your understanding of it.

2. Choose two poems which deal with the same theme. Discuss how the theme is explored in each poem and explain which poem you believe offers a more memorable exploration of the theme.

3. Choose a poem which features a relationship.

Discuss how the poet’s presentation of this relationship adds to your

understanding of the central concern(s) of the poem.

4. Choose a poem in which the poet presents an apparently ordinary situation or event in an extraordinary way. Discuss how the poet gives impact and meaning to an apparently ordinary situation or event.

5. Choose a poem which you find emotionally unsettling or intellectually challenging. Explain how the poem elicits this response from you and discuss how this contributes to your understanding of the central concern(s) of the poem.

6. Choose a poem in which two or more of the following techniques

significantly enhance the impact of the poem: rhyme, rhythm, sound,

imagery.

Explain how the poet’s use of your chosen techniques enhances your

understanding of the poem as a whole.

7. Choose a poem which explores the pain of love or the pleasure of love or the power of love. Discuss how the poet’s exploration deepens your understanding of the pain or the power or the pleasure of love.

8. Choose a poem in which there is a powerful evocation of place. Discuss how the poet powerfully explores a specific place to explore an important theme.

9. Choose a poem which features a complex character. Explain how the complexity of the character is presented and discuss how significant this aspect of characterisation is to the impact of the poem.

10. Choose two poems which approach a similar theme in different ways. Explain the nature of these different approaches and discuss which approach leads, in your opinion, to the more pleasing poem.

11. Choose a poem which explores either the problems of growing older or the joys of being young. Explain how the poet presents these aspects and discuss to what extent she/ he succeeds in deepening your understanding of them.
