You may not have taken part in any training for some time. This work book is designed to help you adjust to learning again and build a foundation of knowledge on which this course is built.

Your responses to all that follows in this work book will be discussed with your tutor when you first meet. Your answers to questions in this book can be typed directly into this book unless otherwise indicated.

Send this completed work book to your tutor as an attachment to one email with the subject title of “Family Pre Course Work” at least 24 hours prior to commencing your course.

The following questions require you to have read the course materials and you will need to do some internet research too.

Pre-Course Assessment

1. What are the roles and responsibilities of a Family Celebrant?

2. Name five different kinds of ceremony a Family Celebrant would write and lead.

3. What is the difference between a marriage and a wedding?

4. In your role as a Family Celebrant; while conducting an initial interview with an engaged couple, you establish that they intend to hold their wedding ceremony on a beautiful piece of common land in the middle of their village. What would be your thoughts on such an intention? Would you offer any advice? If so, what would your advice be?

5. The above couple reveal that they have no intention of getting legally married but want a wedding certificate to be signed at their wedding ceremony. Any objections? Please explain your answer.

6. A client has asked for a handfasting element to be carried out as part of their wedding ceremony. What is a handfasting and what is used as part of the ceremony?

7. Read the list of special ceremony elements examples in your coursebook and find five more additional ones which you think can be incorporated to a wedding/commitment/renewal of vows or a naming ceremony. Explain briefly how they are done and what is involved.

Section 2 – Self Assessment

1. Complete a Wedding Initial Interview Checklist using either fictional or known family/friends as if they were the clients. Be sure to include at least three pieces of music, two poems / readings and three special ceremony elements as well as an indication of what the vows may be.

2. Produce a draft wedding ceremony from the Wedding Interview Checklist and include all poems and readings, the vows and title/artist of musical tracks chosen.
