Give children guidance about looking through Poems 1-16. Suggest that they try to read at least five poems but try not to take longer than 15 minutes looking. Suggest a similar amount of time/reading for the Children’s Poetry Archive. Finally, give them your own top tips about reading a poem aloud and learning it by heart. Children then do Tasks 1 and 2 (this is 2 days work)Task 1: Children look through Poems 1-16. They look to find a favourite there. They look too on the Children’s Poetry Archive website and any books they have at home. When they have chosen an overall favourite poem, they practise reading it aloud. Task 2: Children watch Michael Rosen perform one of his poems. They try to learn some or all of their overall favourite poem off by heart. Main teaching – Lesson 2 Could be delivered via video conferencing or posted on YouTube or via Dropbox* Read children Sea Fever, then talk through Sea Fever Notes, explaining the first three sections (Title, First Line, Alliteration). Show children the Poetry Appreciation Prompts and explain that they will first make notes, then write an appreciation of their favourite poem from Day 1.
