Meeting Reports

Saturday, May 11th: Anne Morgan’s judge’s report of the Nairda Lyne Award was presented and results announced as follows:

1st Prize & winner of the Hobart Bookshop Prize ‘Big is Better’ by Andrea McMahon, Moonah TAS. Highly Commended: Donna Lee Austin, West Hobart TAS.

Commended: Dianne Bates, Woonona East NSW; Carmel Lillis, Yarraville VIC and Denise Melville, Bulleen VIC & Special Mention: Ian Puddy, Laverton VIC.

Andrea McMahon and Donna Austin read their stories and Jess Castle and John Hale read their entries for Patron’s Puzzler Number 3. We then had members’ readings from Beryl Griffiths (prize-winning entry from 2012 Barney Roberts Award), Karen Wilson, Penny Cohen, Fiona Duncan, Fiona Stewart, John Biggs and John Hale. Glen Smith also spoke briefly about writing story lines for films.

Saturday, June 8th: John Biggs gave the 2013 Biennial Jess Castle History Lecture entitled Generational Phases in Post Colonial Tasmania, based on his book Tasmania Over Five Generations: Return to Van Diemen’s Land? This book has been described as ‘a unique ground-level look at Tasmania’s social and political progress from colonial settlement to the present’ … ‘seen through the eyes of five father-son generations of one family’. The lecture, well illustrated with excellent photographs, had us enthralled and generated much discussion.

News & Views

* We welcome back Alan Williams as an FAW Tasmania member.

* Robert Curtis’s novel Blackberries is a book about children and while it is suitable for young readers, the literary allusions and word play in it will appeal to many adult readers as well. The Prologue explains that a round black stone the size of a full stop came from the depths of space and fell into the Arafura Sea off Pig Island and blew most of the world to bits. All that was left was a cloud of dust, a tin of dark plum jam and a fragment of land on one bank of a narrow stream known as 44 Gallon Creek. It’s on that land that the survivors, three children and a feral cat, first appear. The book is available for $10 from Robert at PO Box 468, New Norfolk TAS 7140.

* Some members have reported that they’ve not been able to locate copies of Tasmanian Sagacity. Hobart Bookshop stocks the magazine. For people outside Hobart, Tony Royce on 03 6398 2420, at PO Box 645, Kings Meadows 7240, or tony@.au will be able to suggest other stockists. Among lots of interesting articles, stories and reviews, Issue 5 contains Ian Kennedy-Williams’ review of our own FAW anthology Other People’s Houses.

* Members will be pleased to know that beginning on July 7th, Republic Bar & Café readings will resume on the first Sunday of every month from 3 – 5 pm, We thank Heather Freedman for volunteering to organise the extra readings to fill the gaps between the quarterly events Liz Winfield will co-ordinate.

* In July Gina Mercer will begin tutoring a Long Form Poetry course for TWC. Classes will be held monthly for five months, beginning on July 29th. Details on the TWC website

* Terry Whitebeach was busy in 2012 acting as judge for the Scanlon Prize for Indigenous Literature, the Writing Australia Island of Residencies Program – Bruny and Kangaroo Islands – and the National Year of Reading Competition. She also wrote a successful application for a grant from Writing Australia’s ‘English as an Alternative Language’ project. This will enable Terry to work with the Tasmanian Sudanese Madi community and children’s writers Julie Hunt and Anne Morgan and illustrator Gay McKinnon to produce two Madi/English picture books. Terry also had success with her own writing and editing projects. (See Credits p 3.)

* Lyn Reeves is Australian Poetry’s Poet-in-Residence at Fullers Bookshop, Hobart from now until December. She will be in the Afterword Café to meet with writers and readers from 10 am to 12 noon on Tuesdays and from 10 am to about 2 pm on Saturdays. Lyn is often busy with grandchildren these days and can’t attend many of our meetings. This residency provides good opportunities to catch up with her.

* Tasmanian Writers Centre has announced a winter discussion series, The Larger Conversations, which will be hosted by Jeff Malpas of UTAS in the Founders Room, upstairs in Salamanca Arts Centre, from 2 – 4 pm on the Sunday afternoons of July 14th, 21st and 28th. Entry is free to TWC members and $10 to others. The discussions between Tasmanian authors, historians and scientists will explore the questions Whose History? (Henry Reynolds & Patsy Cameron, July 14th), Whose Place? (Pete Hay & Kate Booth, July 21st) and Whose Environment?(Kendal Hodgman & Gustaaf Hallegraeff, July 28th). Details at or pick up a leaflet from TWC.

* TWC has also announced that Writers @ the Lark will resume, beginning on July 3rd, when Danielle Wood will host a special Masters @ The Lark at which UTAS Masters in Creative Writing students will read from their work. The series from August to December will feature authors from the TWC 2013 Broadsheet of books published by Tasmanian writers during 2012.

* The ‘Behind every war there are good women’ exhibition of poetry (part of the 100 Years from Gallipoli Project) was on display in Rosny Library in June. Unfortunately, we didn’t receive notice about this until after our May/ June issue went to press. However the exhibition is at Kingston Library between June 29th and July 27th and will be at Launceston Library from September 23rd to October 18th. See Competitions section page 6 for details about the 100 Years from Gallipoli Poetry Prize.

* Tim Thorne has been awarded the FAW VIC 2012 Christopher Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Australian literature, especially poetry. We offer our hearty congratulations!
