TITLE: CAPITOL POLICE OFFICER (7008) – 5 Vacancies

PAY RANGE: (17) $1081.60-1125.60-1172.00-1221.60-1272.80-1324.80-1378.40-1433.60 (Bi-weekly) plus a $00.25 hourly stipend

$13.52-$17.92 hourly

BARGAINING UNIT: F – Law Enforcement

Value* of State-paid Health Insurance:

     Level 1:  100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):  $363.77 biweekly

     Level 2:  95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $345.58 biweekly

     Level 3:  90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):  $327.39 biweekly

    Level 4:  85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $309.20 biweekly

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program as of July 1, 2011.

LOCATION OF POSITION(S): Capitol Complex, Riverview Psychiatric Center, and other State properties in Augusta

DESCRIPTION: This is investigative and protective services work. Provides law enforcement services and maintains security at the seat of government.  Work includes patrolling assigned area, conducting investigations of alleged violations and complaints, issuing tickets and summonses, arresting violators, supporting weapons screening operations, performing other law enforcement and security functions, and providing information and assistance to the public.  Schedule may require working nights, weekends and holidays and is performed under general supervision.

There are currently 5 police officer openings, of which four are newly created positions to allow for 24 /7 police coverage at Riverview Psychiatric Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or equivalent with no criminal or extensive motor vehicle record.  Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire. Must have completed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) Reserve Officer Training Program or have completed the MCJA Pre-Service Training Program. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Must successfully complete a polygraph examination, or must have no break in continuous law enforcement certification since last successfully completing a polygraph examination.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).

Valid Maine Class C driver's license required.  Must hold current certification or be eligible for certification by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy as a Maine Law Enforcement Officer. Must have completed the Reserve Officer (100 hour school) pre-service training previously provided by MCJA or have completed the basic law enforcement pre-service training program currently provided by MCJA prior to employment-- See the following website for more information: Must complete the additional 120 hours of in-service training based on curriculum approved by the MCJA Board of Directors for Capitol Police Officers within twelve months of employment.  Must maintain continued certification by MCJA as a Maine Law Enforcement Officer.

NOTE: Current certification by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy as a Maine Law Enforcement Officer will be considered to meet the above criteria for Minimum Qualifications and Licensing Registration/Certification requirements.
