Wagner’s Ring cycle continues with Siegfried,

starring Stefan Vinke, making his Met debut in the title role

The 2018-19 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with Siegfried, the third opera of Wagner’s epic masterwork Der Ring des Nibelungen. Stefan Vinke, internationally acclaimed in the title role, makes his Met debut as Siegfried, an unruly young man destined to become a hero. Gerhard Siegel is Mime, who raises Siegfried in order to gain power himself. Michael Volle is the Wanderer who anticipates the end of the rule of the gods, and Christine Goerke is Brünnhilde. The cast also features Karen Cargill as Erda, Tomasz Konieczny as Alberich, and Dmitry Belosselskiy as Fafner. Philippe Jordan conducts the third of all four Ring cycle operas being broadcast this season. The performance of Siegfried will be heard live over Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 13.

German tenor Stefan Vinke has sung the role of Siegfried with many companies, including the Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Bayreuth Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Canadian Opera Company, Opera Australia, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and Royal Opera, Covent Garden. He performed selections from the Ring cycle opposite Christine Goerke with the Met Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 2016. Other performances of Wagner include the title role of Tannhäuser at Leipzig Opera, Walther in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Opera Australia, and upcoming appearances as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival and in the title role of Siegfried at Leipzig Opera, where he will also sing the Emperor in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten.

German tenor Gerhard Siegel reprises Mime, the role he sang for his Met debut in 2004 and repeated in three subsequent seasons. He has also appeared with the company as the Captain in Berg’s Wozzeck, Herod in Strauss’s Salome, and the Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, a role he reprised earlier this season at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. Other recent performances include Herod in Salome at Oper Graz and Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and Mime in the Ring cycle at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. Next season he returns to the Met as the Captain in a new production of Wozzeck.

German baritone Michael Volle makes his Met role debut as Wotan/the Wanderer. His 2014 Met debut as Mandryka in Strauss’s Arabella was followed by appearances as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, the Dutchman in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer, and Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca. Elsewhere this season he sings Jochanaan in Salome at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mandryka in Arabella at Bavarian State Opera, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bayreuth Festival, and the title roles in Verdi’s Falstaff at Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Nabucco at Zürich Opera. This spring, he continues at the Met as Wotan in Ring cycle performances of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, and returns next season to reprise the role of Scarpia in Tosca.

American soprano Christine Goerke makes her Met role debut as Brünnhilde with this season’s performances of the Ring cycle, after having sung the role to acclaim with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and Canadian Opera Company. Her twelve roles at the Met include the Foreign Princess in Dvořák’s Rusalka, the Dyer’s Wife in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten, and most recently, the title roles of Strauss’s Elektra and of Puccini’s Turandot. Other recent credits include Elektra at Houston Grand Opera and Canadian Opera Company, and Ortrud in Wagner’s Lohengrin and the title role in Turandot at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. She also sings Brünnhilde in upcoming Ring cycle performances at the Met, including Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung, and next season, she reprises the title role in Turandot.

Scottish mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill appeared earlier this season as Erda in Met performances of Das Rheingold. She made her Met debut as Waltraute in Götterdämmerung in 2012 and reprised the role during the 2012–13 season. Also at the Met, she has sung Anna in Berlioz’s Les Troyens and Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Her other recent performances include Geneviève in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at the Glyndebourne Festival and Waltraute in Götterdämmerung at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. Later this season at the Met, she sings Mère Marie in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, which will be seen in cinemas around the world as a part of the Met’s Live in HD series.

Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny made his Met debut earlier this season as Alberich in Das Rheingold. He has previously sung the role at the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Munich Opera Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Tokyo Opera. He also appeared at the Met earlier this season as Abimélech in Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila. Performances elsewhere include Karl in Schubert’s Fierrabras at La Scala, Don Pizarro in Beethoven’s Fidelio at Vienna State Opera, and Telramund in Lohengrin at the Bayreuth Festival, a role he reprises there this summer. He adds the role of Alberich in Götterdämmerung to his Met repertory in coming weeks as performances of the complete Ring cycle continue.

Russian bass Dmitry Belosselskiy makes his role debut this season as Fafner in the Ring cycle. Since his Met debut in 2011 as Zaccaria in Nabucco, he has returned in the Verdi roles of Ramfis in Aida, Silva in Ernani, and Wurm in Verdi’s Luisa Miller, as well as the Old Convict in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. His other Met roles this season include Ramfis in Aida and The Old Hebrew in Samson et Dalila, both of which were broadcast around the world as a part of the Met’s Live in HD series, as well as performances this month as the Commendatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. During the Met’s 2019-20 season he will sing Fiesco in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra.

Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan made his Met debut leading Johann Strauss Jr.’s Die Fledermaus in 2002, and has since conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro and Bizet’s Carmen with the company. He has been the music director of the Paris Opera since 2009 and the principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra since 2014. He will become music director of the Vienna State Opera in September 2020. He has also conducted at the Munich Opera Festival, tSalzburg Festival, Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Houston Grand Opera, and Royal Opera, Covent Garden, among others. Upcoming performances include Don Giovanni and Borodin’s Prince Igor at Paris Opera, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bayreuth Festival.

The intermissions will include artist interviews, and the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera Singers’ Roundtable.
