PH27B: Introduction to Philosophy of Art

Essay & Tutorial Questions

1. Critically analyze and discuss three theories of art. State how these theories apply to indigenous and Caribbean art.

2. Is there a difference between art in Africa and art in the Western world? Carefully articulate, using examples cited in Beauty and Culture (2003).

3. Analyze the effectiveness of art in understanding, documenting and interrogating culture. Carefully analyze the above issue, making reference to aesthetics in Africa and the Caribbean, emphasizing at least how this applies to two art media.

4. Beauty and Culture (2003) maintained that most scholarly discussions of Africa and African Diaspora art have been descriptive and historical, not normative and intellectually interpretive. Do you agree with this view or evaluation of traditional discussions of art? Justify your position.

5. Carefully analyze the view that art is reflected in human identities. State how artistic constructions of identities would differ between cultures.

6. Examine carefully the relationship between art and morality in society.

7. Analyze the role that truth plays in art. Discuss, in relation to art in Africa and the Caribbean with emphasis on the effect art has on adolescents in societies.

8. In what respect is popular culture, as in music, beauty contests, cartooning and pornography capable of being judged as good or bad art? Explain your views.

9. Examine the influence of tourism art on art, artistic understanding and experience in the Caribbean.

10. In light of the views discussed in Chapter 6 of Beauty and Culture (2003), analyze the ways in which art may be valued. Justify your position citing examples from your own culture.

N.B: One extended essay of approximately 2500 words. Please turn in your essay during the week of March 1, 2008. You may submit your essay to your tutor during tutorial of the week stated above. Remember, there is a penalty for late submission. Consult the lecturer if there may have been genuine extenuating circumstances for not turning in the essay on the final day of the deadline.
