Favorite Song Choices

Objective/Goal:

• Collect and display data

o Ask and answer simple questions that can be answered by collecting and displaying data.

Materials: computer, Word, Excel, document cameras, projector

Anticipatory Set: We’re having a whole sing-a-long next week. I wonder how Mr. Hunley will choose the songs we will sing. Encourage kids to think of ways to collect this information.

The third grade classes decided to poll the entire school to find out which songs are the most popular choices to sing at the winter sing-a-long.

Each third grade class took two grades and designed a ballot for students to fill out. One took the K-1 and adapted an age-appropriate ballot and method of presenting it. Another third grade class took the second and third grades, creating a ballot appropriate to them. The third class took the 4th and 5th grade classes and designed a ballot to tally their choices. Each group will then create a graph from their level and a whole school graph will be created and given to the music teacher to help him guide his song choices.

Instruction/Guided Practice:

• Review how to create a table in Word. Students brainstormed in small groups and developed rough drafts of a ballot. Each group then constructed a table in Word with all of the choices, complete with a symbol or picture about the song to assist non-readers in making their song choice.

• To create a table find the Table label on the menu bar and choose INSERT…Table

• When you have figured out how many columns (vertical) and rows (horizontal) fill in the numbers and click OK.

• Many students decided to create their ballots (tables) like the following:

|SONGS | |VOTE FOR 1 |

|O Christmas Tree | [pic] | |

|Jingle Bells | [pic] | |

|Deck The Hall |[pic] | |

|Frosty The Snowman |[pic] | |

|Rudolph The Red-Nose Reindeer |[pic] | |

Pick Your Favorite Song

• To insert pictures, students clicked in the cell (the box) that they wanted to picture to go. Under INSERT on the menu bar, select picture and then clipart.

• On the side students can search for a topic, like jingle bells.

Students then chose a picture for

each song to assist young students in matching the song they know to the printed words.

The picture was adjusted to fit the size of the cell.

• Students practiced using the document camera and ‘presented’ their ballot to each class. The class with the K/1 students chose to even sing parts of the songs and match them with the pictures so kids could make their decision.

• Now with the data collected, review how you would make a bar graph in Excel. Tell students that today they are going to be using the data they have collected and make a bar graph of the class’ votes.

• Demonstrate how to create a table in Excel. Show how to change the width of a column when the words are too long.

• Erase the chart and then ask students to tell you what you should do first. Then ask a student to come up and do that step on the computer using the projector to model for all students. Continue on step by step to create the chart correctly.

• Show students the next step of highlighting and using the chart wizard.

• Then choose the type of chart you want to make—bar graph.

• Click next and then you have to label the graph with a title.

• After the title is written, press next.

• Then choose to place the chart in a new sheet.

• Then show kids how to click on one portion of the chart to change its color. Show how the little square will highlight the part to be changed. Then model changing the colors.

• Model how to save and print the final graph.

• Students shared their graphs using the projector and computer.

• Students listed their data on a whole-school table and then created a bar graph of the most favorite songs of Mid Valley Students

• Students then presented this data to Mr. Hunley, the music teacher. The most popular songs were enjoyed by students at the sing-a-long before winter break.

Assessment: For an assessment, students created their own whole graphs with the collected data and wrote a reflection about the process.

Closure: Have students review and share some strategies and new discoveries about:

➢ using Word to create a ballot (table)

➢ using Excel to create graphs

➢ using the document camera to teach or instruct others

➢ why collecting data is powerful and helpful
