The Ames Woodworkers Club meets at various places in Ames and in other locations in Central Iowa. Unless otherwise announced, meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Membership is open to all interested in woodworking, arts and crafts involving wood, and related activities. Annual dues for 2017 are $10.00.

NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, September 19th, 2017

Program: Building a Woodworking Shop – Design and Practical Considerations

Presenter: Clay Gurganus

Time: Gathering begins at 6:30 pm; Meeting begins at 7:00 pm

Location: Shop of Clay Gurganus, 2620 Somerset Drive, Ames, Iowa.

Do you ever think about or want to build a “dream” woodworking shop?  If so, you should attend this meeting.   Clay Gurganus will discuss the process he went through to build his new 864 square foot shop.  He will start with the dreaming process and go all the way to completion, explaining some of the snags and improvements that happened along the way.  He will share some things that he would do again, and the things that would be done differently, and discuss things that were done to keep costs down and save money.  In-process photos of the construction and finishing of the building will be shown, as well as getting a tour of the new shop.  Please come with questions and comments.

There will be a short Business meeting to remind members for the need of host shops for the Shop Tour Saturday event on October 21st. Show and Tell will be limited to only small items, given the space considerations involving meeting in a relatively close area. Note: For those attending the meeting, a few chairs will be available, however members may bring their own folding chair or stool to assure their seating if they want or need to sit while attending the meeting."

Directions to the Clay Gurganus Shop - 2620 Somerset Drive, Ames - From the intersection of 13th Street and Stange Road in Ames, head north on Stange Road, past 24th Street, and continue north for two short blocks and turn east onto Bristol Drive. Continue heading east on Bristol Drive, past Kent Ave., until Bristol “T’s” into Somerset Drive. Turn left (heading north) and 2620 is on the east side of the street. Note: Parking is only permitted on the west side of Somerset Drive; do not park on the east side of Somerset Dr.!

UPCOMING 2017 MEETING DATES….mark these dates on your calendars: September 19th – Shop Set Up; October 21st – Shop Tours; November 21st – Making a wooden recorder (??; tentaitve) December 12th – End-of-Year Meeting/Potuck

LAST MEETING NOTES: The August meeting of the Ames Woodworkers Club was held on Tuesday, August 15th in the Fire Safety Institute building on the campus of Iowa State University. Approximately 28 members were in attendance. After some general announcements, President Al Johnson asked for reports from Cabinetmakers & Furnituremakers and Turners special interest groups which included descriptions of past and forthcoming activities. Show and Tell items were brought by Rich Meester and Al Johnson. Members were reminded of the need for host shops for the upcoming Shop Tour Saturday on October 21st. The program was presented by Des Moines woodworker John Twedt who presented a demonstration of how to design and make small chairs using simple designs and mortise and tenon joinery. John reviewed the basic aspects of chair design, including splaying of legs, position and height of the seat, hand rests, back, etc, and how to modify the design for additional comfort and aesthetic improvements. He had examples of chairs and chair parts at different stages of completion, and discussed specific aspects of joinery and how the various parts are interdependent and work well in certain configurations and not others. A question and answer period concluded John’s presentation, which members participated in extending the discussion about specific aspects of building chairs “from scratch”. We thank John for his well-presented and thorough demonstration!

• OCTOBER 2017 AWC MEETING – The AWC's meeting for September 2017 will be held on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21st and will be THE ANNUAL SHOP TOUR SATURDAY Event! We are still in need of members to host shop tours (see below.) Summaries of the participating shops and directions to their locations will be included in the October 2017 AWC Newsletter

• CABINET AND FURNITUREMAKING GROUP - We last met at Clay Gurganus’ shop on August 22. Clay showed a mobile kitchen island made from butcher block panels. There four folding wings that could be used independently to expand the table space. It had wheels to make to very usable and functional for his client. Cy Hornberg showed a table or desk on wheels that was at the height of  a raised work service to be able to used when standing up. It was made from walnut and constructed using a plan from a magazine. It was unique and the support structure was curved and the legs were slanted. It was constructed using mortise and tenon construction.   The meeting topic was researching or finding pertinent information to help in equipment or other purchases. Brett Meyer and Tom Oxley described the process they used to find information they needed to help make the decision on the piece of equipment to buy. They used the example of finding information to help buy the hollow chisel mortiser that would suit their needs. They used Clay’s large screen monitor to show the process they used to find information. They described using a Google search to find vendors and manufacturers, customers surveys, magazine articles, equipment tests done in the past, and detailed specifications. It was also helpful to find out how to avoid paid advertisements and find the specific internet sites that would be the most helpful. The next meeting will be at Cy Hornberg ‘s shop in Ogden on Sept 26. Gathering begins at 6:30 pm. with the meeting beginning at 7:00 pm. The topic will be discussing the design and construction of mortise and tenon joints, specifically those joints that do not meet at a 90 degree angle. If you would like to join the Cabinetmakers Special Interest group, contact Will Zitterich at wzitterich@.

• TURNERS GROUP – The August meeting of the Ames Area Woodturners was held on Sunday, August 20th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the shop of Roger Nass, approximately 22 members attended the meeting. . The demonstration topic was “Tips, Hints, and Tricks to make your Woodturning Better”, presented by Roger Nass and Rob Wallace, The demonstration showed a number of simple ways to improve turning activity and success. Some of these topics were shown at the AAW Symposium in Kansas City in June; many of these hints are often taken for granted by experienced turners, however for beginners they are new and can be important additions to one’s turning techniques. The business meeting included discussion of plans for future group orders, forthcoming meetings for fall (including a possible tool-build Saturday), and other items. Show-and-Tell projects were brought by Paul Christensen, Doug Stremick, Jerry Turbett, Roger Nass, and John Burright. The next AAWT meeting will be held on Sunday, September 17th at 1:00 pm in the shop of Roger Nass. The topic of the meeting presentation is being confirmed at this time. Details about the September AAWT meeting will be included in the September 2017 Turners Update newsletter to be sent to group members via e-mail. Contact Rob Wallace (rwallace@iastate.edu; 292-5785) if you are interested in joining the Turners Group.

• SHOP TOURS 2017 – WE ARE IN NEED OF MEMBERS TO HOST SHOP TOURS!

This year’s Shop Tour Saturday will be held on Saturday, October 21st and we still need several additional members to host a shop tour – it is a half-day commitment (either 9 am to noon, or 1-4 pm) to have your shop open for fellow members to see. In past years there have been shops of all kinds shown on the tour – it is a great way to get and give ideas of tool arrangement, storage, and use of the space you have. There were a few members volunteering to host tours at the July and August meetings, however we need a few more shops to have a variety of different shops to see. If you are willing to host a tour at your shop on October 21st, please contact Al Johnson at 233-4831 (awindj@) or Rob Wallace at rwallace@iastate.edu to get on the tour list and help us put on this popular event.
