Black Country Mid-Year 2019 Population Estimates The Black Country population is growing and in 2019 stands at nearly 1.2m residents – a 0.5% increase from 2018. The Black Country LEP has one of the youngest population proportions (0 – 15 years old) across all LEPs at 21.3% of the total (second only to Thames Valley).Full Brief:The mid-year 2019 population estimates show that there are 1,198,881 residents in the Black Country LEP (BCLEP) area, an increase of 0.5% (+5,491 people) from the mid-year 2018 population estimate, slightly below the England average growth of 0.6%. The BCLEP population had 592,437 males (49.4% of total population) and 604,444 females (50.6%) in 2019. Within the BCLEP, Walsall had experienced the highest number and percentage increase in population, by 0.7% (+2,100) to reach 285,478 residents. Dudley had the lowest number increases and one of lowest percentage increase at 0.3% (+970) to reach 321,596 residents. This share is second only to the Thames Valley Berkshire LEP (21.6%), with the BCLEP above the England average of 19.2%. Across all LEPs, BCLEP is the 7th lowest for the percentage of people aged 65 years old and over, at 17.4%, and below the England average of 18.4%. BCLEP is the 18th highest for the percentage of people aged 16 – 64 years old with 61.3%, below the England average of 62.4%. Within the BCLEP, all local authorities are above the England average for the percentage of people aged 0 – 15 years old, and they vary from 19.4% in Dudley to 22.7% in Sandwell. In contrast, all Black Country local authorities are below the England average for people aged 16 – 64 years old, varying from 60.2% in Dudley to 62.3% in Sandwell.
