BIOLOGY Class Notes 10-2

Aim: How is population growth limited?

A) LIMITING FACTORS

o Limiting factors: factors that cause population growth to decrease

[pic]

← All of the above listed are examples of limiting factors which have a direct affect on population size

B) DENSITY DEPENDENT FACTORS

← Density dependent factors: limiting factors that depend on population size

← they only become limiting factors when the population density reaches a certain level

← density dependent factors usually do not affect smaller populations

← Examples are:

1. Competition

2. predation

3. parasitism and disease

C) DENSITY INDEPENDENT FACTORS

← Density independent factors: affect all populations regardless of population size

← Examples are:

1. unusual weather

2. natural disasters

3. seasonal cycles

4. human activities
