Question for written answer

?Question for written answer E-003334/2019to the CommissionRule 138Michal Wiezik (PPE), Martin Hojsík (Renew), Vladimír Bil?ík (PPE), Ivan ?tefanec (PPE)Subject:Wolf hunting in SlovakiaOn 14 October 2019, the Slovak Ministry of Agriculture set an annual quota for wolf hunting at a maximum of 35 wolves. During the committee meeting, Slovakia’s Ministry of the Environment, its State Nature Conservation Agency, and several other committee members proposed a total ban on the practice. Moreover, over the past two weeks, over 60 000 Slovak citizens signed a petition calling for a ban. A CJEU judgment on this case (C-674/17) proposes that wolves may only be hunted if there is no viable alternative to lethal population management. Furthermore, the Slovak wolf population is listed in Annex V, rather than IV, of the Habitats Directive1, meaning that populations of the species may be managed by culling. However, wolves have been listed as a species whose conservation requires the designation of special areas of conservation under Annex II, which is not the case for any Finnish wolf population. The number of wolves that have been killed annually since 2013 has been far lower than the hunting quotas set for the respective years, despite hunters’ best efforts.Would the Commission consider the aforementioned Court judgment to be applicable to the Slovak wolf population, and does it believe that this arbitrary and unjustified annual quota, which would hinder population management efforts, should be re-evaluated? ................
