3. Population and Demography

The population estimates describe the size, regional distribution and age and gender structure of the population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate for midyear 2016. Statistics and corresponding key indicators on births, deaths, marriages and divorce for the calendar year 2018 describe the vital events affecting population change.The resident population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate was 2,908,173 people at mid-year 2016. The estimated population in Abu Dhabi Region was 1.81 million (62.1%), Al Ain Region 0.77 million (26.4%), and Al Dhafra 0.33 million (11.5%).In Abu Dhabi, fertility is higher than most developed regions of the world, and mortality remains extremely low. In 2018, Crude Birth Rates and Crude Death Rates were 13.7 births and 1.2 deaths per 1000 population respectively.

3.1. Population

The population data in the Statistical Yearbook includes Census data up to 2005 and mid-year estimates of the usual resident population from 2005 . The population estimates include all persons who are usual residents, and also those temporary absent and Abu Dhabi Emirati citizens away from the Emirate. In 1975, the total population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate was 211,812 people, according to the 1975 Census, and this gure increased to 1,399,484 people in the 2005 Census. In mid 2016 the population was estimated to be 2,908,173 persons. Of the total Abu Dhabi Emirate population, 551,535 (19.0%) are Emirati citizens. Of the citizens, 293,860 (53.3%) live in Abu Dhabi Region, and 226,285 (41.0%) in Al Ain Region, and 31,390 (5.7%) in Al Dhafra Region. The non-citizen population comprise 81.0% of the total resident population. Of the non-citizens 1,513,376 (64.2%) live in Abu Dhabi Region. More than 63.9% of the population of Abu Dhabi Emirate are males, due to an in ux of male migrant workers. The population density of Abu Dhabi Emirate in 2016 was 48.9 persons per square kilometre. The population density in Abu Dhabi Region, Al Ain Region and Al Dhafra Region were 164.2, 57.3 and 9.5 persons per square kilometre respectively. Al Dhafra Region is the most sparsely populated region in the Abu Dhabi Emirate but with a fast population growth. Figure 3.1.1 Population Pyramid for Citizens, Mid 2016
