Job Title: Spin-out portfolio manager
School/Department: IP Commercialisation Office, Business Engagement and Innovation Services (BEIS)
Salary: £37,394 - £45,954 (based on performance can be extended to £53,248)
Job Family and Level: Administrative, Professional and Managerial Level 5
Contract Status: Fixed term, 3 years
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week
Location: Sir Colin Campbell Building, University of Nottingham Innovation Park
Reporting to: Head of Commercial Ventures
The Purpose of the Role:
Based within the IP Commercialisation Office, the purpose of this role is to support the formation, growth and development of the University’s portfolio of spin-out and research related companies, working in concert with and reporting to the Head of Commercial Ventures.
Main Responsibilities:

| |To formulate or identify to new sources of funding, both grant and investment, to support the formation of new ventures. | |

|2. |Operational Management |70% |

| |Working in concert with the Head of Commercial ventures to support the formation, growth and development of spin-out and | |
| |research related companies and to monitor their performance. | |
| | | |
| |This will include: | |
| | | |
| |The development of commercialisation plans in concert with academic inventors leading to the drafting of investable | |
| |business plans | |
| | | |
| |Assisting emergent companies in the sourcing of investment funds | |
| | | |
| |Supporting the formation of new companies in concert with the IP management team by agreeing terms of shareholders, | |
| |pipeline, licensing and consultancy agreements. | |
| | | |
| |Manage post-incorporation adherence to company agreements. | |
| | | |
| |Provide risk management support associated with the financial and reputational aspects of the University’s engagement in | |
| |new ventures | |
| | | |
| |Maintaining relationships with existing University portfolio companies through Board representation where appropriate. | |

| |To keep abreast of current and emerging developments in the field of expertise, in both the education sector and in | |
| |business that may be used to enhance the service and efficiency | |

Decision Making
i) Taken independently by the role holder;
• Own workload prioritisation and associated delegation of work to other members of staff where appropriate.
• Any operational decisions on service provision.
• Implementation of decisions following Senior Management’s approval of change.
• Responses to complaints and associated negotiations.
• Proactively write reports and makes strategic recommendations.
• Project management decisions.
• Activity/Performance review
• Project progress reporting.
ii) Taken in collaboration with others;

|Responses to requests for information (depending on topic). |
iii) Referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder;
• Approval for recommendations for policy change.
• Reports requiring senior management approval or which would impact on departmental strategic change.
• Items with additional budgetary implications.
Additional Information
The University has a portfolio of spin-out companies that it has formed over the past 10-15 years.
The University also forms and has a small portfolio of research related companies in which it holds the majority equity stake.
