Katharine Cahn, MSW, PhD has been the Executive Director of the Child Welfare Partnership at Portland State University’s School of Social Work since Oct., 2004. Prior to that Dr. Cahn served for fifteen years as the Northwest Institute for Children and Families at the University of Washington School of Social Work. She has over 25 years’ experience in child welfare training, education, and research. She is particularly interested in the dynamics of systems change, leadership, and promoting racial and ethnically responsive services in child welfare.

Cahn has been the PI of multiple children’s bureau training grants as well as other privately-funded projects to improve the quality of child welfare practice, and has conducted trainings and conferences across the Pacific Northwest and nationally. A published author, she co-edited a book on permanency planning and court collaboration called Children Can’t Wait, and has provided chapters for three books: Critical Issues in Child Welfare, Controversial Issues in Social Work, and Supervision in Child Welfare. Cahn earned a BA in American Studies/Political Science from Reed College, a MSW with a concentration in community/organizational studies from the University of Washington, and a PhD in Social Work and Social Welfare Research from Portland State University.

Chris has professionally engaged in creating learning designs, conducting and creating leadership and management programs, delivering and facilitating curricula associated with human development in private, non-profit, and for-profit settings. She has also worked with individuals and groups on organizational, cultural, and system change issues. She is particularly skilled in identifying and fostering individual and group engagement values, and facilitating processes for system change and outcome driven efforts.

Chris is an experienced project coordinator and her background is Public Affairs, of which she has a Master’s Degree from NC State University. She has worked for The Public School Forum of North Carolina, University of NC-Chapel Hill, School of Social Work, NC Community College System, North Carolina Public Schools, North Carolina Association of County Directors of Social Services, she has been President and Manager of an Independent Bookstore, and has been hired as a consultant by a variety of private and non-profit agencies. Chris is a certified mediator.
