FEBRUARY GENERAL MEETING

Monday, February 11 - 1:30 PM

Durham Evangelical Church (lower level)

Time to socialize and enjoy light refreshments starting at 1:30, followed by a short business meeting at 2:00. Dudley Dudley, former State Representative and Executive Councilor from Durham, will provide a first-person account of the 1973-4 grass roots fight against Aristotle Onassis’s planned oil refinery on Great Bay.

SEACOAST MEMORIAL LECTURE

Thursday, April 25 - 1:30 PM

Durham Evangelical Church (lower level)

Jeremy D’Entremont, an historian-photographer who has been called the leading expert on New England’s lighthouses, will present “Lighthouses of Southern New Hampshire and Maine.” Come learn about these historic, picturesque structures and their vital role in our nation’s early maritime economy and New England’s history and culture.

Members are notified, via e-mail, about current program changes, cancellations, but only if you have signed up for the service. Yellow e-mail registration cards are available from the Membership Director at all General Meetings.

If the Oyster River School District cancels school for weather-related conditions, programs (including Kittery) will be cancelled for weather-related conditions. Members should check their e-mail or the ARA website or listen to radio station WTSN, 1270 AM, Dover; WHEB, 750 AM, 100.3 FM, Portsmouth; or WMYF, 1380 AM, Portsmouth; or tune to WMUR, Channel 9.

MONDAY PM — MOVIES WITH A MUSICAL THEME

The Residence at Silver Square, Dover, NH

February 18 – The Concert. A celebrated conductor working as a janitor at the Bolshoi for 30 years launches a plot with fellow musicians to perform at a famed concert hall in France. Music by Tchaikovsky. Subtitles.

February 25 – Manhattan. Set amid glorious scenes of Manhattan in Woody Allen’s love letter to NYC, we see the often-complicated relationships of some of its inhabitants. Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton and Mariel Hemingway perform with Woody in the 1979 film. A wonderful soundtrack opens with Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”.

March 4 – The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan. Ellie is determined to make Savoyards of us all now with a new and improved copy of this 1953 film. Maurice Evans and Robert Morley star as Martyn Green performs songs from favorite Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. The film depicts the sometimes-stormy relationships among William Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan, and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.

March 11 – Moonstruck is a 1988 film with Cher, Nicolas Cage, and Olympia Dukakis. A lovely story and a wonderful soundtrack add up to more than a feel-good movie. We all might even sing along with Dean Martin’s “Amore.”

February 20 – Owners, bosses, and workers have negotiated pay and conditions for years. Cliff Brown, Associate Professor in the UNH Department of Sociology, will speak about the history of labor relations in NH and the wider world, as well as how individuals and groups mobilize to pursue collective goals.

February 27 – The PBS documentary, Shirtwaist Factory Fire: 100 Years Later, vividly recalls this pivotal 1911 disaster, which took 146 lives and led to the strengthening of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union and to Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Discussion will follow.

March 6 – Andrew Toland and friends will speak about the effect of unions on labor relations in the US, but especially in NH. Andrew is the Media and Communication Coordinator for the State Employees’ Association of NH. He has a blog post about the history of public employee unions in NH.

March 13 – Catt Sandler, labor lawyer and State Representative, will speak on labor relations and the law.

February 20 – Surveillance in the Digital Age. Brought back by popular demand, Professor Andrew Macpherson, Senior Lecturer in Political Science and a researcher in Justiceworks at UNH, discusses the implication of evolving surveillance technologies and their public and private applications. February 27 – National Security Threats. Professor Andrew Macpherson returns to fill us in on current threats to U.S. security. Coordinator: Carol Selsberg (207) 439-7957

March 6 – Palestinian Territories. Jeannie Sowers, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the International Affairs Program at UNH, will speak about civilian infrastructure, war, and the Palestinian Territories on the East and West Banks. Coordinator: Michael O’Sullivan (603) 742-4621

March 13 – The Village Is Coming! Find out how you can age in place with the help of the Seacoast Village Project. Nancy Euchner, one of the founders, will share the history of this national movement, now in over 200 areas across the country, and the local proposal to provide social connections and meaningful support from members, trusted volunteers, and professionals. February 21 – The Living Bridge Project. Learn about a Bridge that monitors its own structural health and environmental conditions, and is powered by tidal energy. Discussion will be led by Erin Bell, Department Chair and Associate Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNH.

February 28 – Aquaculture in New Hampshire will be discussed by Michael Chambers, Aquaculture and Fisheries State Specialist at UNH Cooperative Extension.

March 7 – Forest Health. Come learn about what can impact the health of our trees from forester Andy Fast, Field Specialist (Natural Resources), for UNH Cooperative Extension.

March 14 – Backyard Ecosystem Changes. Susan Pike, Ph.D., a biology instructor at St Thomas Aquinas High School and a Seacoast Online columnist who writes “Nature News”, will discuss how your backyard’s ecosystem is changing.

February 21 – Working the Family Farm. Sarah Cox of Tuckaway Farm in Lee, NH, will draw upon two generations of Cox Family experience as she discusses innovative organic methods for building and sustaining the family farm. Coordinator: Mary Ellen Siudut (508) 308-7103

February 28 – Heirloom and Native Plants: A Living History. John Forti, Executive Director of Bedrock Gardens (Lee, NH), former Director of Horticulture and Education at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and former Chief Curator of historical gardens and landscapes at Strawbery Banke, will bring to life the unique living history of plants that have a defining presence in our region. March 7 – Conserving Public Lands. John Wallace, Chairman of the Barrington Conservation

Commission, will discuss the importance of public lands within a community and the process of conserving them. Coordinator: Valerie Allen (603) 905-9892

March 14 – Sculpture for the Garden. Presenter Jill Nooney is co-founder of Bedrock Gardens and founder of Fine Garden Art, which produces one-of-a-kind art for the garden. Many of her welded steel sculptures can be seen at Bedrock Gardens. Coordinator: Bob Ely (603) 868-5582

MONDAY PM — A ROBOT IN YOUR MOVIES,

AND YOUR FUTURE?

March 25– Ex Machina (2014). A young programmer participates in a ground-breaking experiment to evaluate the human qualities of a breath- taking humanoid A.I.

April 1 – C.H.O.M.P.S. (1979). A young man invents a robot dog with super strength, X-ray vision and ability to detect crimes being committed. A greedy businessman attempts to steal it.

April 8 – Forbidden Planet (1956). A spaceship crew investigates a planet’s colony gone silent and finds two survivors, one of whom has a deadly secret.

April 15 – Robot and Frank (2012). In the near future, an ex-jewel thief receives a robot butler as a gift from his son. The robot is programmed to look after the father, but the two join together to try their luck pulling off a heist.

March 27 – Health Care Policies / Access to Health Care. Bob Woodward, UNH Professor Emeritus, Department of Health Management and Policy, will discuss the history of health care, and current concerns about health insurance, health care policies, and access to care. April 3 – The Environmental Movement. David Ramsay, retired from a 25+ year career in the environmental field, will discuss early environmental regulations and concerns about present deregulation, with an historical look at how Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring helped launch the environmental movement. April 10 – Environmental Contamination. Mindi Messmer, State Representative, environmental consultant, and founding member of New Hampshire Safe Water Alliance, will update us on pollution due to manufacturing with new chemicals, particularly PFOA (used in producing Teflon). April 17 – Waste: Where is Our Trash Going? How do we ensure our recycling actually gets recycled and reused, and doesn’t go to the landfill? Amy Allgaier Howard of Pinard Waste Management will address these questions and more. Coordinator: Mary Ellen Siudut (508) 308-7102.

WEDNESDAY PM – THE IMPACT OF HISTORY ON FASHION

March 27 – Victorian Fashions for Men and Women. Astrida Schaeffer has been researching and making reproduction historical clothing since 1986. She will introduce us to what19th century clothing makers thought about design, including the design principles of that time period and how they were applied.

April 3 – Does Fashion Matter? Nadine Farag is a local writer and fashion blogger who will take us on an exploration of fashion through time, its place in contemporary society, and its current impact on the environment.

April 10 – The Suffrage Movement and Dress Form. Astrida Schaeffer (see above) will discuss how the Suffrage Movement affected female fashions, as women began to take more control over their lives.

April 17 – Fashioning the New England Family in the 18th Century. Dr. Kimberly Alexander of the UNH Department of History will demonstrate how New Englanders used costume to establish gender, class, and political affiliation, and will explore how family stories make it possible to interpret the way a particular garment may have embodied an individual’s sense of identity.

March 28 – New England’s Last Great Glacier. Joseph Licciardi, Professor and Chair of the UNH Earth Sciences Department, will describe the processes and extent of the most recent glacial incursion across New England, and its role in large-scale landscape change.

April 4 – The Age of Stone Walls. Waller and author Kevin Gardner offers his unique take on New England-style stone walls, hallmarks of the 17th-18th century agricultural age of this region. (This is a joint program with the New Hampshire Humanities Forum.)

April 11– The Age of Mills and Large-Scale Manufacturing. Jessica Lepler, Associate Professor of History at UNH, will walk us through the 19th century economic landscape and the rise of capitalism and mass industry.

April 18 – The New Hampshire Economy Today. Education, light industry and technology, specialty farming, tourism, and retirees all are important components of today’s economy and landscape. We’ll hear about them from Victoria Cimino, Director of the Division of Travel and Tourism Development in the NH Department of Resources and Economic Development.

March 28 – Treat Yourself to Tea. Emmett Soldati, who brought his knowledge of tea from England to open an unusual tea café in his small NH hometown, will share his thoughts about tea, the creation of imaginative tea blends, and the challenges of operating his café, Teatotaller, in Somersworth. April 4 – Zen and Chinese Tea Culture. Tea originated in southwestern China and was first used as a medicinal drink over 4800 years ago. Yige Wang, Confucius Institute Co-Director at UNH, will introduce us to the cultural history of tea preparation and use in China. Coordinator: Penny Drooker (603) 397-5681

April 11 – Coffee Production and Processing. Have you ever wondered how your morning cup of coffee made its way to you, and what happened along the way? Here’s your chance!
