The American Architectural Foundation offers several scholarships:
The RTKL Travel Fellowship for Architecture Students provides one $2,500 fellowship is awarded to a student submitting the winning proposal outlining a foreign itinerary which is directly relevant to his or her education goals. Students must complete travel prior to graduation. Deadline is in mid-February. The Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship provides opportunities for French and American architects to learn and exchange information about their respective country's historic preservation process and techniques.

The Bowman Travel Grant is designed to encourage US students considering an educational experience in non-traditional countries. CEA awards over $60,000 annually through seven different types of scholarships. The average dollar amount awarded per scholarship is $700. This program is offered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000, depending on the length of their program, to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. The applicant must be a citizen or national of the United States who is currently an undergraduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions). The applicant must be participating in a study abroad program approved for credit by the student's home institution of up to one academic year of study. The applicant must be receiving need-based student assistance from the federal government under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Title IV student financial aid includes Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants.

The purpose of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. A more realistic statement of the purpose, in today's terms, is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to college juniors and seniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students; two-year institutions may nominate up to two students who are sophomores during the 2002-2003 academic year. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university using the official nomination materials provided to each institution. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Scholarship monies not used during one academic year are not transferable to the succeeding academic year. Junior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarship support, and senior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support. To be considered for the scholarship, students must be full-time matriculated sophomores or juniors pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education. Sophomore nominees can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support. Students in two-year colleges who plan to transfer to a baccalaureate program at another institution may be nominated.

The IIPP Fellowship program provides students with specially designed education and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international affairs careers. Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a five-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and graduate study. UNCFSP is aided in the student recruitment effort by its institutional partners and distinguished selection panels comprised of U.S. ambassadors, deans of schools of international affairs, graduate school admissions directors, foundation executives, and IIPP alumni. The IIPP established the Sophomore Summer Policy Institute (SSPI) at Clark Atlanta University’s School of International Affairs and Development in 1995. Each year a new class of fellows begins the program at the eight-week SSPI. The course of study includes International Politics, Research Methods, U.S. Foreign Policy, International Business, Economics, and selected area studies. Fellows who successfully complete the Sophomore Summer Policy Institute participate in the Junior Year Study Abroad component. Fellows may study for one or two semesters at an approved overseas institution. The IIPP provides funding for as much as one-half of the total cost of study abroad, with the unmet half being covered by a combination of government and institutional aid, as well as some reasonable family contribution. Fellows attend the Junior Summer Policy Institute (JSPI) during the summer following the junior year. Those without previously established language competency are required to participate in an intensive language-training program during the summer following their senior year. They are also required to enroll in foreign language courses at their home institutions to lay the foundation for a productive language training experience during the senior summer. Fellows who have established language competency participate in a summer internship experience in lieu of intensive language training during the summer following the senior year. For some who opt to defer graduate school for one year, the internship may span the fall and spring semesters as well. Fellows who successfully complete each component of their respective fellowship sequences are eligible to receive graduate fellowship assistance for a master’s degree in an international affairs-related field. Institutional members of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), as partners in the IIPP effort, provide matching fellowship support as available. Applicants must be a sophomore student, enrolled full-time at a four-year institution; be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident; have a minimum 3.2 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); have a strong interest in a career in international service, and an underrepresented minority: African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, Asian American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) is a unique scholarship opportunity for U.S. undergraduates who want to study abroad. These scholarships are available to students who study in critical world areas such as Africa, Asia (China and Japan), Eastern and Central Europe, Latin and South America and the Middle East. The Special Caribbean Fellowships Program (SPECAF) is an instrument at the regional level for the financing of studies leading to a Bachelor's degree at universities and other educational institutions in OAS member States. Studies may be undertaken in any of the member States of the Organization of American States, with the exception of the country of which the candidate is a citizen or permanent resident. Fellowships normally begin with the commencement of the academic year. Fellowships are granted initially for periods of up to twelve months. Two awards programs are for undergraduates—the FKF Internship Support Grant Competition and the FKF Study Abroad Support Grant Competition. Both competitions are open to qualified members and nonmembers in all fields of study. While the Internship Support Grant is designed to support students in their academic field by working outside of the academic setting, the Study Abroad Support Grant is designed to provide support as students seek knowledge and experience through studies abroad. Four $1,000 Study Abroad Support and four $1,000 Internship Support grants will be awarded in each of Phi Kappa Phi's five regions. This represents 40 grants totaling $40,000 that will be awarded to undergraduates. In addition, Phi Kappa Phi offers the following awards every three years:
National Scholar Award
The National Scholar Award recognizes excellence in scholarly activities in any academic field. The criteria established for this award include: outstanding record of past scholarly achievements; documented evidence of national/international prominence and visibility; distinguished record of honors, publications, patents, inventions, or other types of recognition for excellence and scholarly achievement.
National Artist Award
The Society established the National Artist Award in order to recognize excellence in its members, namely that of outstanding achievement in the broad realm of the arts. The criteria established for this award are: distinguished record of past accomplishments in the arts (dance, music, theater, art, sculpture, etc.); documented evidence of national/ international prominence and visibility; demonstrated ability to effectively promote excellence in the arts; acknowledgment by peers in the field through national/international awards or other means of recognition. Each award is given once per triennium. Information on the 2004-2007 competition will be available in Fall 2003.

Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for one academic year of study in another country. This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies up to $23,000 or its equivalent. Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either two or three years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of $11,000 or its equivalent is provided per year to be applied toward the costs of a degree program. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country and provide funds to cover round-trip transportation, language training expenses, and homestay living arrangements, not to exceed $10,000 and $17,000 respectively. Applications will be considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish. Scholarship candidates must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary club, and may apply through a Rotary club in their legal or permanent residence (or place of full-time study or employment). Scholarships are available to individuals of all ages, provided the candidate has completed at least two years of university coursework or equivalent professional experience prior to beginning scholarship studies. These scholarships will be awarded to approximately 40 Americans each year, and require superior academic achievement. This scholarship supports study in a British university of the candidate's choice (although that choice should be made on the basis of the particular plan of study being proposed) for up to three years of study toward a second undergraduate degree or a graduate degree. The age limit of 26 may be waived in the case of candidates wishing to read business studies or an allied subject. Gates Cambridge Trust intends to offer a substantial number of awards annually, which will cover the costs of studying at Cambridge. Some of these awards will be for students from the United States of America; but students from all countries, including the countries of the European Union other than the United Kingdom, will be eligible to be considered for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships. Student applicants should be of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom further study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate. Students will need to provide evidence of their ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline, either by research, or by teaching, or by using their learning creatively in their chosen profession. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme is an international competition. candidates will be expected to have excellent transcripts showing evidence of sustained academic achievement in study, together with references able to speak knowledgeably about the candidate's actual academic performance and his or her potential for scholarly growth. A Gates Cambridge Scholarship can only be taken up by a student who has been admitted to Cambridge through the University's normal application procedures. These are separate from the selection procedures for selection as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. The Mitchell Scholarship provides financial assistance to study or conduct research at Institutions of higher learning, including the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland, for one academic year of graduate study. The George J. Mitchell scholarships were established in 1998, and are named in honor of the former U.S. Senator who served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. As the goal of the Mitchell Scholarships is to interest the next generation of American leaders in the island of Ireland, Scholars will be encouraged to avail themselves of the various educational and social opportunities which will be offered to them during their stay by members and friends of the US-Ireland Alliance. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., persons in the process of becoming U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and permanent residents of the Northern Mariana Islands. The US Department of Education has awarded CIEE funding under the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program to provide financial assistance to students who are participating in the Chinese language programs offered by the CIEE Centers at Peking University, East China Normal University (Shanghai), Nanjing University, and National Chengchi University (Taipei)

Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled or employed in an American educational institution. Employees of the federal government of either the U.S. or India are not eligible. The first fellowship includes the languages Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugi, and Marathi. Applicants are required to have a minimum of two years or 240 class hours of classroom instruction in the targeted language before starting the program and are also required to be committed to a teaching career. Teachers in Area Studies are also eligible to apply. The second session runs through the summer of 2001 and includes Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Gujarati. This is an intensive immersion-type language program for graduate and unusually qualified undergraduate students in U.S. colleges and universities; students applying in Hindi should have at least two years of prior classroom instruction; one year is required for applicants in Bengali, Tamil and Telugu. Applicants for Gujarati and Marathi may apply at all levels, including beginning. Applications for other languages will be considered.

These scholarships, which apply for semester or full-year study at IES Tokyo, include a monthly cash award of 80,000 yen (approx. $800), a one-time allowance of 25,000 yen (approx. $250) and round trip airfare. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in a college or university in the United States. Students are not eligible if they received a scholarship from AIEJ in the past. Students may not be receiving scholarship assistance from any other source which is equal to or greater than 80,000 yen per month. Students must meet the general admission requirements to enroll in the IES Tokyo program. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Students must complete the AIEJ Tokyo application form on our website at /finaid.html, which requires signatures from your university, and it must be returned by the deadlines noted below. The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project is accepting applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan in Spring 2002. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 45 scholarships to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. Contributors to the scholarship fund include Teledyne Corp., Merrill Lynch, Weyerhaueser, IMCA, Lockheed Martin, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Northwest Airlines, Shinsei Bank, the Freeman Foundation, and the Starr Foundation.
Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in a college or university in the United States. Students attending programs at Japanese four-year universities may also be eligible for a supplementary monthly stipend from the Japanese government through the Association for International Education, Japan (AIEJ).

The Monbusho (Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Government of Japan) offers various scholarships for students pursuing Japanese studies or research in Japan. The KCC established the Graduate Fellowship Program to fund qualified graduate students for one year of research or study in Japan. Two of the fellowships are restricted to women graduate students and one is open to women and men. Fellowships are for $22,500, are for one year, and are not renewable. The purpose of the Program is to support future American educators to become more knowledgeable about Japan. It is expected that recipients of these fellowships will return to the U.S. to teach about Japan. While in Japan, fellowship recipients will be expected to visit Kobe (Jagakuin) College in Nishinomiya to give a presentation on her/his fellowship topic. The KCC will award fellowships to graduate students who have a record of teaching effectively about Japan, or who show promise to do so in the future. There are no restrictions as to place of study, or age of applicant. Preference will be given to applicants who have documented interest in Japanese studies; such as the arts, culture, education, language, history, journalism, or business. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied or lived in Japan, and to applicants who provide written confirmation of the research or study site in Japan. Applicants must be US citizens. They must also be enrolled, in good standing, in a graduate program at an accredited higher education institution in the US. The fellowship is for teaching/research master's or doctoral degrees only. Students enrolled in professional graduate degree programs are not eligible (i.e., MBA, JD, MD, etc.). Fellowship recipients must plan to teach in the US after completing their degree, either at the secondary or higher education levels. Each application will be evaluated on the following items in order of importance: scholarly excellence of applicant, quality of proposal, quality of preparation to undertake the proposed fellowship plan, plan for teaching upon completion of degree, and demonstrated interest in women's education.

MALAYSIA
The Malaysian Technical Co-operation Program provides opportunities for students to pursue advanced academic study in Malaysia. The scholarship is available for post-graduate studies at Master and PhD level tenable at universities. The duration of the award is 36 months for PhD and between 12 to 24 months for Master program. Candidates should, at the time of application, hold a degree or equivalent qualification with at least upper second class honors, (or CGPA 3.0/4.0) for Master program; and holds a Master degree for PhD program. The candidates must demonstrate verbal, reading and writing proficiency in English; Proof of English language proficiency is desirable. The fundamental objective of the Regular Training Program is to promote the economic, social, scientific and cultural development of the member States in order to achieve a stronger bond and better understanding among the peoples of the Americas through the advanced training of its citizens in the priority areas requested by the countries. The fellowships are awarded, with the exception of the medical sciences and related areas, and introductory language studies, for advanced study at the graduate level and graduate research. Citizens or permanent residents of OAS member States who hold a university degree and who meet the requirements to pursue advanced studies or research in the field chosen are eligible to request a fellowship under this program. Fellowships normally begin with the commencement of the academic year. Fellowships are granted initially for periods of up to twelve months. Fellowships may be extended upon request for a second period not greater than the initial period. In no case will a fellowship be extended for a total fellowship of more than two years. This is especially important for PhD candidates whose programs of study are of more than two years. Partners of the Americas offers a two-year educational program in which 40 young leaders from U.S. and Latin American/Caribbean countries participate in a series of seminars and other activities requiring a four to six week commitment during each of the two years. Participants will develop leadership skills and learn about development by actual participation in development projects for which they will have leadership roles; they must be nominated by the Partners of the Americas organization. Fellowships cover international air fare and most of the costs of the program seminars (food, lodging, etc.). As an expression of commitment to the program and to help cover program costs, each participant or his sponsor is expected to contribute $300 per year over the two-year period.

These awards are available to recognized Centers or Institutes of Ibero-American or Latin American Studies with graduate doctoral programs at accredited United States universities. The Grants provide graduate students with travel funds (international and in-country) to Latin America, Spain and Portugal to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of language and culture, to gather research data and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their field. They are awarded by the university institutes/centers for brief periods of research in Iberia or Latin America and should reflect primarily the major interests of the Tinker Foundation, i.e., economic policy and governance and those targeted social science disciplines having strong public policy implications, and environmental policy studies. Awards are limited to graduate students conducting pre-dissertation research. In order to assess the needs of a broader range of universities, the Foundation will now consider two levels of support in the Field Research Grants competition: $10,000 and $15,000. These new funding options are offered on a trial basis and will be reviewed to determine whether they will be permanently instituted.
