Michael MarsdenI am an editor, translator and writer – roles in which I combine versatility with creativity and an eye for detail. I have my own business as an editor and translator, and until recently I was also employed in those roles by the Brazilian embassy in London. I am multilingual and have a great interest in international affairs.PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCEFreelance editing (2007-present)I provide an editing and proofreading service (michaelmarsden.co.uk) for clients who need to produce high-quality documents in English but are not native speakers of the language. With most clients my role is similar to that of a sub-editor or proofreader, but in a few cases I do a substantial amount of rewriting. Freelance translation (2006-present)I translate texts into English from Portuguese, French and Spanish. My biggest projects in the last few years were two books that I translated from Portuguese: the memoirs of Brazil’s former foreign minister Celso Amorim (Acting Globally, Hamilton Books, 2017), and a first-hand account of the Libyan civil war of 2011 by Brazilian journalist Andrei Netto (Bringing Down Gaddafi, Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).Embassy of Brazil, London: Press Office (August 2003-October 2017)Working in a small team with a high degree of autonomy, my responsibilities included: Editing or translating (Portuguese-English) a wide variety of texts – including speeches, letters and articles written by (or on behalf of) the Brazilian president, foreign minister and ambassador; government press releases and communiqués; diplomatic notes; and tourism brochures. Sometimes my role was similar to that of a ghostwriter, for example when I did most of the writing of articles that were signed by the ambassador and subsequently published in the British press.Providing a point of contact between the embassy and the media, including the major British newspapers and the international news organizations with offices in London. I dealt with enquiries and arranged interviews and press conferences when Brazilian government ministers visited London.Producing the embassy’s weekly digital newsletterWriting and editing content for the embassy’s website (until 2014, when the website was redesigned and its content began to be managed directly from Brasilia)Monitoring British media coverage of Brazil and compiling a daily clipping of news stories for the embassy’s diplomats and the foreign ministry headquarters in BrasiliaMichael MarsdenWriting: English Language Teaching (ELT) materialsMacmillan Publishers, UK: 2006-2012Writer of “eLessons” for Macmillan’s Inside Out series of materials for learners of English.
