LIVING SUSTAINABLY

INQUIRY AND ANALYTICAL SKILLSConceptualize a projectIn HIAD 7530, Continuing Prof Educ., the students had to develop a program that could be implemented in the community. I chose to do a program that I named , Living Sustainably A community Outreach Initiative and Hands on Learning Conference. I developed the program to: Introduce the idea of sustainability to underprivileged citizens.Offer simple tips for incorporating sustainable practices in everyday life.Clarify how sustainable practices are beneficial to individual health, community and the earth.Discuss how lifestyle choices impact the environment and resource usage. Please scroll dawn for the artifact for this competency:PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT:Living Sustainably (A community Outreach Initiative and Hands on Learning Conference)Dawn KimbleUniversity of MemphisProgram TitleLiving Sustainably (A community Outreach Initiative and Hands on Learning Conference) LocationThe initial program will be hosted by a Neighborhood Community Center, Recreation Center, or Meeting hall. The initial project location would be in urban neighborhoods and underprivileged communities but with positive results there is the possibility for the program to be catered to schools, and be implemented on the state, regional and even national levels. An atmosphere of challenge and support will be created through small group activities, opportunities for reflection, and individual projects. The participants will have the opportunity to encourage, support and teach each other throughout the program. Rationale and Purpose for Program: Some of us are afforded the choice of a more sustainable lifestyle or the privilege of ignoring the signs of destruction that surround us from day to day. Others face a very different problem because sometimes that choice or the information needed to make an informed choice isn’t even an option. The agents advocating for this program believe that sustainability addresses many issues plaguing underprivileged and immigrant neighborhoods across America. How do we empower individuals to change or improve their lifestyle or eating habits? How do we stress the importance of community stewardship and promote a healthy desire to care for the earth? And finally, how can we explain the connection between sustainable practices and an improved lifestyle? There are many issues plaguing the American public. Many of these issues are preventable with the right care and education. The minority populations are especially affected by disease, poor diet and chronic illnesses. It is said that, this generation is the first generation projected to live shorter lives than their parents. The top three health problems plaguing the public today are listed as heart disease, cancer and stroke. A contributing factor listed below all of these diseases is diet.Statistics from the National Center for disease Control and Prevention on African AmericansPercent of men 20 years and over who are obese: 37% (2005-2008)Percent of women 20 years and over who are obese: 51%(2005-2008)Percent of men 20 years and over with hypertension: 39%(2005-2008)Percent of women 20 years and over with hypertension: 44% (2005-2008)Leading causes of death for African American Populations:Heart diseaseCancerStrokeThe cost of cancer is projected to reach at least $158 billion (in 2010 dollars) in the year 2020--an increase of 27% from 2010.?If all forms of cardiovascular disease were eliminated, life expectancy would rise by close to 7 years. Following the current path, stroke cases will increase by 28.9% between 2003 and 2023 (estimates do not include strokes among the institutionalized population). If an alternative path is taken, there will be 18.8% (589,000) fewer stroke cases. These are all issues that can be addressed with proper education and lifestyle changes. The purpose of this program is to introduce the idea of sustainability as it pertains to; health and wellness, family and community, and earth stewardship. The program will also offer practical and easy tips on how to incorporate sustainable practices into everyday life. There will also be a post-program follow up survey that will be submitted by the participants that covers effectiveness, relevance of content and level of interest. Other forms of evaluation will include comprehensive feedback from select participants, leaders and volunteers and also a post program meeting involving the stakeholders to ascertain the program’s effectiveness. The results of the evaluations will be used to formulate new and more effective programs for the community. The program covers three of Kirkpatrick’s four levels of training evaluation; Reaction- Reaction evaluation is how the delegates felt about the training or learning experience. Learning- Learning evaluation is the measurement of the increase in knowledge - before and after. And Results-Results evaluation is the effect on the business or environment by the trainee. The initial project doesn’t cover the level of Behavior which is an evaluation of the extent of applied learning gathered through observation and interview over time, because the success and possible future of the program is unknown.
