Newsletter Provides Unique Perspective on Autism

Autism is now estimated to affect 1 in 150 children. As parents and schools search for the most effective ways to teach and educate the increasing numbers of children with autism, an online newsletter is providing much needed support. The newsletter has a unique focus: celebrating the strengths, gifts, and talents of individuals with autism.

Positively Autism was created by a special education teacher and autism specialist to combat the prevalent negative stereotypes associated with autism. “Parents and teachers have been told by some professionals that children with autism will not be able to learn, and will never have friends or jobs,” says editor Nicole Caldwell, “From my experiences as an educator, this is simply not true. In many cases, when provided with the proper education and supports, children with autism can lead productive and happy lives.”

To meet the needs of parents and educators who must spend large amounts of money for teaching materials, books, and intervention programs, Positively Autism is a completely free service. Issues of the newsletter provides articles, lists of research studies, positive news stories, and free resources including lesson plans, flash cards, games, social skill stories, and data collection sheets. Caldwell volunteers about thirty hours to write, edit, and publish each issue of the newsletter. “This is my way to give back to all of the children and families that inspire me each day as a teacher,” Caldwell says.
