1. How has the nominee/group/club exceeded their normal responsibilities to enrich and improve the lives of Humber students, faculty, support staff and administrators?

The definition of appreciate is "to value or admire highly and recognize with gratitude". However, this does not begin to express how grateful I am to have John Walker as the Student Life, Events Assistant. I have had the pleasure of working with John for two years. In addition to being a great assistant, he is also an outstanding member of the Lakeshore campus and deserves to be recognized for his various contributions to student life. John continuously works hard to engage students and enhance their college experience. He is always looking for ways to get himself and others involved whether it is by encouraging his peers to follow in his footsteps and sign up as a Senior Peer Mentor, Peer Tutor or Environmental Club member. As a strong advocate for student involvement and the environment, John can be seen on campus promoting ways to be active and sustainable. He is hardworking with a kind heart, conscious mind and applies his positve energy and optimistic outlook to everything. He has proven himself to be an invaluable member of the Student Life team and the Lakeshore campus.

2. Please give one or more concrete examples of a time when the nominee/group/club demonstrated dedication, selflessness or spirit? Please be as detailed as possible.

John dedicates what seems to be equal energy, passion and commitment to all the activities that he participates in. As an events assistant he regularly goes above and beyond his position to take on additional tasks and responsibilities. He often works from home and stays late to ensure that his projects are completed. Although he is a student, John has taken on significant responsibilities that would normally be given to a full-time staff member. He is responsible for managing our social media accounts; redesigning and managing the website content; developing HTV ads, posters and flyers to market and promote events; training and supervising over 25 event volunteers; in addition to providing administrative support. John is not only hardworking and creative but he always has positive, kind and uplifting words to share. He always manages to do a great job of motivating the team to "get going" on those early mornings and to "hang in a little longer" during those late evenings. He personifies what it means to be a team player.

3. What is one word you would use to describe the nominee/group/club?

Supportive, reliable and passionate are a few of the many words that I would use to describe John.

4. What do you find inspiring about your nominee/group/club?

John's dedication and positive attitute are the most inspiring things about him. People who know John describe him as "someone that you can depend on and look to for leadership and direction".

5. What would be missing if this nominee/group/club did not do what they did?

His great work ethic, kindness and passion has had a positive impact on the students, faculty and staff that he has interacted with during his time at Humber. When he graduates this year, there will be a huge void on our team as well as at the Lakeshore campus that will take a very long time to fill.

Volunteer of the Year Award Nomination Example

1. How has the nominee/group/club exceeded their normal responsibilities to enrich and improve the lives of Humber students, faculty, support staff and administrators?

Mary Jane Starr is an amazing individual who dedicates most of her free time to volunteering. During her time at Guelph-Humber, Mary Jane has volunteered as the Psych Society President, Psychology Conference Assistant, Honours Society Coordinator , Senior Peer Mentor and Orientation Volunteer. In addtion to managing a full-time course load, working part-time and volunteering between 15-20 hours a week on campus, she also finds time to volunteer with the Children's Aid Society and Habitat for Humanity. She is committed to helping others and promoting the practice of psychology through her daily interactions. Mary Jane truly goes above and beyond the required effort to actively create and maintain a welcoming and supportive environment for her peers.

As the leader of the Psych Society and advocate for the Guelph-Humber Pyschology program, Mary Jane is an incredible mentor and support system for all of its members. She takes time to connect with everyone to monitor their personal, academic and mental well-being. For the past three semesters, Mary Jane has volunteered her time towards organizing weekly study groups, monthly social activities, mental wellness workshops and stress management information sessions for students in the Psychology program. When I was struggling to manage my responsiblities, Mary Jane was there to personally offer the moral, physical and emotional assistance that I needed to get back on track. Her guidance and support has helped me to become a better version of myself. She is unrelenting on her quest to advance the Psych Society, promote the study of psychology and create a sense of community for her peers.

3. What is one word you would use to describe the nominee/group/club?

Compassionate is the one word that best describes Mary Jane. She focuses most of her time and energy towards supporting others and ensuring that she does everything possible to assist them in accomplishing their goals.

4. What do you find inspiring about your nominee/group/club?

Mary Jane's resiliency and passion are incredibly inspiring. Her drive and ability to manage her personal, academic, social and volunteering initiatives and responsibilities encourages so many of us to work harder and strive for more.

5. What would be missing if this nominee/group/club did not do what they did?

Great leadership and optimism would be missing if it were not for Mary Jane's unwavering support for her peers, faculty and program. She helps to facilitate a greater sense of belonging that enhances the overall experience for students in the Psychology program.

Judy Harvey Student Spirit Nomination Example

1. How has the nominee/group/club exceeded their normal responsibilities to enrich and improve the lives of Humber students, faculty, support staff and administrators?

The Guelph-Humber Student Association (GHSA) demonstrates the true embodiment of the Judy Harvey Student Spirit Award. The GHSA is made up of 20 volunteer student leaders all of whom are balancing their GHSA responsibilities with their full-time course load in addition to other on-campus leadership opportunities, work-study positions and part time jobs. GHSA members sit on curriculum committees where they advocate for the best interests of their program and bring forth curriculum changes. They work with academic advisors and career services staff to plan professional development and academically based events all geared towards improving the student experience and helping them to make informed decisions.

2. Please give one or more concrete examples of a time when the nominee/group/club demonstrated dedication, selflessness or spirit? Please be as detailed as possible.

Throughout the year the GHSA members volunteered their spare time to planning and executing a number of events to increase student engagement, build school spirit and create awareness about local and global issues. At the beginning of the school year they held mix and mingle events for mature, LGBTQ, and international students. They also planned numerous social events throughout the year to celebrate Ede, Diwali, Christmas, Chinese New Year and Easter. In addition to all of their other events they were able to successfully organize a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada to fund anti-bullying awareness campaigns and programming that raised over $2,300 as well as a Culture Shock event which helped raise over $4,000 for Second Harvest.

3. What is one word you would use to describe the nominee/group/club?

"Inclusive" is the first word that I would use to describe the GHSA. They are an exceptional group of students that dedicate so much of their time towards building a great sense of community and belonging for their fellow students.

4. What do you find inspiring about your nominee/group/club?

Their commitment to volunteerism and student advocacy is what I find most inspiring about the GHSA. They continue to push forward and actively improve life on campus for both current and future students.

5. What would be missing if this nominee/group/club did not do what they did?

An enourmous amount of school spirit would be missing if the GHSA was not around to advocate for students. They support each other as an association as well as their fellow students in the broader Humber and Guelph-Humber community and deserve to be acknowledged for their positive contributions.

Ignite Club of the Year Award Nomination Example

1. How has the nominee/group/club exceeded their normal responsibilities to enrich and improve the lives of Humber students, faculty, support staff and administrators?

The Muslim Student Association (MSA) continuously goes above and beyond club expectations to actively engage with the Humber community, which makes them ideal candidates for the Ignite Club of the Year Award. The MSA is very active in numerous Ignite and college wide events such as Orientation, Clubs Fairs, Mental Health Fairs in addition to their own events including Hijab Day, Islam Awareness Week and Weekly Prayers.

2. Please give one or more concrete examples of a time when the nominee/group/club demonstrated dedication, selflessness or spirit? Please be as detailed as possible.

The MSA frequently dedicates their time to support and offer solidarity to their peers by organizing workshops on Islamaphobia and hosting numerous other events to create awareness about Islam and demystify the misinformation and stereotypes that exist. One example of their level of dedication, selflessness and spirit was displayed shortly after the terrorist attacks in Paris. The MSA made themselves available to take the TTC with students who were anxious about traveling alone. This small act of kindness had a signficant impact and goes to the core of why they are deserving of this award.

3. What is one word you would use to describe the nominee/group/club?

One word I would use to describe this group is committed because of how much time and effort they dedicate to their on-campus activities.

4. What do you find inspiring about your nominee/group/club?

Their commitment to creating awareness about Islam and inclusion in spite of all the challenges and potential barriers is one of the many inspiring things about the MSA. The members are kind, compassionate and patient students who work extremely hard at sharing their beliefs in the most respectful and inclusive way possible.They are relentless in their efforts to ensure that the club is successful at creating awareness about Islam, promoting peace, supporting students and creating a positive experience.

5. What would be missing if this nominee/group/club did not do what they did?

The sense of peace, unity and belonging would be missing for many students if the MSA was not an active part of the Humber community.
