Reconstruction Test Prep – This will be a Summative Assessment! (60%)

1. Know the vocabulary and application-the haunting & eerie “Voices from History”

2. Lincoln’s plan vs. Radical Republican’s Plan vs. Johnson’s Plan (his motivation & actions – the reality of what happens under Johnson)

3. Causes & Effects of Lincoln’s assassination

4. Cyclical nature of sharecropping/tenant farming & how cash crops fit in.

5. Formation and impact of KKK on Reconstruction.

6. 13th, 14th, & 15th Amendments – Understand the reasons for & how they connect with each other (how they build on top of one another).

7. Johnson’s impeachment proceedings.

8. Why 1877 Compromise was so important to the “end” of Reconstruction.

9. Steps taken by state & local governments to prevent Freedmen from voting.

10. Reasons why North eventually lost interest in Reconstruction during Grant Administration.

11. Why there was a need for Federal troops (“Union”) military presence in the South during Reconstruction (examples – Think about the “Aftershock” video)

12. Effects of Democrats coming to power in the South (this question builds on #’s 8 & 10)

Sample Voices from History question – Match the correct vocabulary term with the ideas put forth in the narrative.

“You call this freedom? I can’t own property. I can’t be out on the streets after dark. I can’t be unemployed otherwise I might get thrown in jail, but the only jobs available are the same ones I was doing before the war and I might not even get paid at the end of the day. This isn’t freedom. This is worse than slavery!”

Essay Prompts (You only need to answer one, but I would prepare two just in case)

Prompt #1. We have discussed the positives and negatives of the Reconstruction Era. Please explain to me if you feel that the Reconstruction Era was a success, failure, or both. Please support your opinion with things that you have learned.

Prompt #2. Although there were states where the African-American population was greater than, or equal to the white voting population, Southern democrats won elections. Explain the various ways and tactics Southern states used to prevent the African-American population from casting their votes.

Prompt #3. Explain how President Lincoln was viewed by the American public during office and the causes and effects of Lincoln’s assassination.

Prompt #4. Describe the “New South’s” aspirations for agriculture and how the cyclical nature of sharecropping/tenant farming and cash crops fit into this picture.
