OBJECTIVES

After going through this course a student will be able to:

• Define the need and purpose of your research

• Define the process of identifying your research area.

• Identify and use literature for your research

• Appreciate the process of proposal writing

• Appreciate the methods of data preparation and analysis

• Use the methods of data interpretation and visualization

SYLLABUS

This course comprises of 2 Blocks.

• Block 1 discusses the conceptual framework of research and introduces to various aspects of problem definition, designing methodologies and the process of technical writing. Block 2 is focused on explaining some of the common tools and techniques used in the research methods. This block provides details on topics like data preparation, data analysis tools and data interpretation and visualisation. It also present simple case study.

o Introduction to Basic Philosophical Foundations – Positivism, Central Tenets of Positivist Philosophy, Criticism of Positivism, Post-Positivism, Karl Popper and Critical Rationalism, Thomas Kuhn and Growth of Knowledge, etc.

o Models of Scientific Explanation - Hypothetico-Deductive (H-D) Model, Deductive Nomological (D-N) Model, Inductive- Probabilistic (I-P) Model

• Unit 2: Problem definition and Analysis

o Literature Survey and Review

• Unit 3: Introduction to Designing Methodologies
