Guidelines for MFEC 2016 Poster Contest“Needs and Wants”“Needs and Wants.” An important life lesson is teaching children the relationship between needs and wants. The understanding of this relationship guides children in making choices. Not all needs and wants cost money, but many do. A child’s recognition of their needs and wants will influence when and how they decide to spend their money. It important to emphasize to children that they have a choice to make other than spending on immediate needs or wants. This translates to saving which plays a critical role in developing financial responsibility at an early age. In “needs and wants”, creativity is highly encouraged, as long as children illustrate their understanding of these important concept that a person’s needs and wants must both come from one source, their income, and it is not an unlimited source.Needs - things that we need to surviveWants - things that we would like to have Depending on grade level and the ability to understand more complex concepts, teachers may want to set certain dollar amounts and encourage children to divide up their money (e.g. Total of $100, how much would you spend on needs or wants and how much would you save?).EligibilityThe contest is open to all children who are in kindergarten through fifth grade.Poster GuidelinesPoster size is 8 ?″ by 11″.
