Internet Job Search

The Internet is quickly becoming a valuable tool in any job seeker’s toolbox.  The Internet can be used to research careers and employers, find job openings, get valuable information about the labor market, make resumes available, and even contact employers directly.

It is a good idea to add the Internet to your list of job search tools but, as with all techniques, you must be careful not to rely too heavily upon it.  Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will be able to conduct a successful job search using only the Internet.  However, combining Internet resources and search abilities with existing job search techniques (such as responding to advertisements, informational interviews, phone calls and personal visits to employers) can give you a competitive edge.

Job Central:    is an alliance between two nonprofit associations, DirectEmployers Association and National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), to provide job seekers in all industries and occupations, entry-level to chief executive officer, valuable, up-to-date information about employment and career opportunities nationwide.

The Job Search Manual:    is a comprehensive job search manual that covers the entire job search. It has worksheets that job seekers can use to evaluate themselves and refine their job search.  It will also prepare you for informational interviews to help you get the most out of them.

The Riley Guide:    by Margaret Dikel is a great resource for using the Internet to find work.  It contains helpful advice and links to job search information.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook:  the government’s premier career reference book on occupations and tomorrow’s job market, allows you to use a simple search form to look up information on particular occupations or just browse through possible careers.

The America’s Career InfoNet: provides comprehensive information on careers.  It provides a general outlook, wages and trends, state profile search and career resources. This resource includes skill levels, task and activities, education and training, detailed wage expectations and more.

Researching Companies on Line:   provides an easy step-by-step process for finding employer’s information online.  Just follow the on-screen directions.
