LESSON NOTES: TEMPTATION

Temptation can come to us in three ways: by the world, by the flesh and by Satan.

1. Temptation by the World

o The term “world” in scripture does not always mean the universe or earth created by GOD.

o Sometimes it is used to describe the group of sinful humanity that occupies the earth.

o This sinful group or community has a spirit of rebellion against GOD

o Because of this rebellion or opposition to GOD, the WORLD values things that are contrary or against GOD.

▪ John 2:16 ( … the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

o Temptation by the world attacks believers in two areas:

▪ Lust for sensual pleasure (5-senses: see, hear, feel, taste, touch)

▪ Pride in the their life (power, success, fame, etc.)

o The attraction to the world temptations is amplified by Satan

o Some of the tragic effects that love of the world will produce are:

▪ Turning away from the Lord and other believers

▪ Turning away from the work or call GOD has for you

▪ Corrupting sins

▪ Deception by false teachers

o The solution to the temptations of the world is to have a GREATER LOVE for GOD.

o The Christian who seeks to please GOD daily in everything and strives for spiritual growth through prayer, study of His Word, and witnessing will not fall prey to the world temptations.

2. Temptation by the Flesh

o Flesh in the Bible often means more than just the substance of the human body (skin).

o It is used constantly to refer to carnal, sinful practices that man do against GOD.

o The actions produced by the flesh are given greater details in Romans 1:18-32 & Galatians 5:19-21 ( hatred, anger, false religions, disobedient, envy, drunkenness, impurity, sexual sins, etc.

o A person whose life is characterized by these sins are under the wrath of GOD and some may question if they are truly Christians.

o The flesh is not totally removed for Christians but we do not have to obey it

o As Christians we posses a new nature that empowers us to resist by the Holy Spirit

o Since the flesh and Holy Spirit are totally opposite from each other the believer must decide which one is going to control them.

o One solution to the power of the flesh is to acknowledge the power of Jesus to cancel or nullify sin and to live under the control of the Holy Spirit.

o A believer must choose by an act of their will to be controlled by the Spirit.

3. Temptation by Satan

o The role of Satan against the Christian is summed up by the meaning of his name: “adversary”

o He is also called the Devil meaning accuser

o He can appear as a hideous dragon (Rev 12:3,4,9) or as a beautifully deceptive “angel of light” (2 Cor 11:4)

o He stand opposed to ALL the works of GOD and actively promotes rebellion in mankind.

o When Satan rebelled against GOD he took with him a multitude of angels, that we now call demons, with him.

o Satan’s doom is clearly detailed in scripture and secured by Jesus death on the cross

o However, he still continues to hinder or interfere with GOD’s plans and program until he is finally cast into the lake of fire.

o Satan’s work on believers is described in scripture as:

▪ Binding their minds

▪ Takes the Word of God from their hearts

▪ Controls them

o We must constantly be on guard because Satan may influence Christian by:

▪ Accusing them

▪ Hindering their work

▪ Tempting them to immorality

PUPPET SKIT: SATAN Jr.

Curtain rises on two boy puppets in baseball caps. Boy 1 is holding a baseball bat.

BOY 1: Hey, let’s see if we can hit this baseball through that window.

BOY 2: I don’t know; Jesus wouldn’t like that.

BOY 1: I guess you’re right.

SATAN JR.: (off stage) No he’s not.

BOYS: (in unison) Who said that?!

Suddenly from below stage, a half pint Devil rises between the boys. (Writer’s note: use a red flashlight under the Satan Jr. puppet to make this more scary)

SATAN JR: I did. I’m Satan.

BOY 2: No you’re not. You’re too short.

SATAN JR.: Junior. I’m Satan Junior.

KID 2: I didn’t know there was a Satan Junior.

SATAN JR.: You may not know my name, but you know my works. I handle all the little sins. The ones the big guy can’t be troubled with.

(turning to Boy 2) Like staying out past dark when you can hear your mother calling. I’m the little guy who tells you it’s okay.

(turning to Boy 1) And when you stole those extra cookies, and blamed your sister. That was me again, whispering in your ear.

BOY 1: I don’t think so short stuff. I did that one on my own.

SATAN JR.: You only think you did. How else would I know?

(turning back to Boy 2) And who did you think invented those wrappers they put around your favorite music CDs? You can’t tear them off, you can’t cut them off. Genius!

BOY 2: You?!

SATAN JR.: You bet ya! That and bicycle tires that always leak, cars that smoke, childproof lighters, twist top jars held on with super glue, and my favorite (turning to Boy 1) baseballs through windows. So what do you say, sport, let’s have some fun. Let’s crack some glass.

BOY 1: I kinda hate you, but your words are so irresistible.

BOY 2: Wait! Not if you think about Jesus. Say His name and you will see.

BOY 1: Jesus!

BOY 2: Not like that. Softer, with love in your heart.

BOY 1: (closing his eyes) Jesus.

And like an angel, Jesus descends from the clouds (Writer’s note: use cotton balls for clouds.)

JESUS: Be strong my child. Resist his temptation and instead put your faith in Me.

SATAN JR.: Oh, nutz.

BOY 1: Jesus it’s really You. Gee, why don’t You have a Jesus Jr. like Satan does?

JESUS: Because there is only one Jesus, my son, and no matter how small an act of goodness, kindness, or generosity, I will always be there to see it.

SATAN JR.: Show off.

BOY 1: Wow, You really are awesome.

BOY 2: I always knew it.

JESUS: Goodbye for now, boys.

BOYS: Bye, Jesus!

Jesus gently rises back into heaven.

SATAN JR.: This is making me sick. I’m out of here.

BOY 1: Hold on, short stuff.

SATAN JR.: Hey, let go of my horns!

BOY 1 gives Satan Jr. a good old Punch & Judy whack with his bat. (Writer’s note: the kids love this part).

BOY 1: You can tell Satan for us, that he can stay out of our neighborhood for good. We have Jesus in our hearts and there’s nothing he can do about it.

SATAN JR.: Ouch! Ouch! I get the point.

BOY 2: I sure hope so!

|And remember, no one who wants to do wrong should ever say, "God is tempting me." God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else either. Temptation comes from the lure of our own evil desires. |

|These evil desires lead to evil actions, and evil actions lead to death. |
