ORIGIN ? REVOLUTIONARY WAR

George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775

BUILDING AMERICA

1. Army created a separate branch March 16, 1802 responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

2. Civil Works ? 1838 "...contribute to works of a civil nature." Corps created coastal fortifications, mapped the American West, constructed lighthouses, developed jetties and piers for harbors, and mapped and the navigation channels.
