It is never too early to start highlighting your strengths and preparing for your future. The Roanoke College Career Services staff is here to help you throughout the job and/or graduate school search process. Our objective is to help you achieve your career goals.People create resumes for many reasons and, depending on your situation, your resume may look a bit different from those of your peers. For example…If you are using your resume at a career fair, you may choice to go with more generic wording and no objective allowing a perspective employer to develop an overall idea of your skills and experience. If you are using your resume for a specific position, use wording directly from the job description, allowing a potential employer to visualize you in that position.Generally, college graduates should try to keep their resume to one page; however, there are always exceptions. If you are using your resume to apply for a teaching job, for example, your resume may be two pages. Use your best judgment, and ask questions. If you are using your resume to apply for a federal government job, closely follow their instructions. They may have specifics that are needed on your resume. Carefully follow directions. These resumes may also extend to two pages due to the amount of details required by the federal government. This information is designed to help you develop a resume that best represents you. When preparing your resume, keep the following information in mind: Your resume is the SINGLE most important aspect of your job search. Your resume should accurately represent you on paper and be a true reflection of who you are. Be proud of who you are and what you have accomplished. Your resume will group you with like candidates with similar backgrounds, highlight your strengths and structure the interview in your favor.Your resume will remind the interviewer of your skills and accomplishments. Your resume should use vivid language to allow the reader so “see” you in a professional work environment. The attached Resume Rubric is an evaluation tool that will help us and you determine the potential effectiveness of your resume in a job search. Resumes do not follow a cookie-cutter approach in design; every resume should be created to fit the needs of its writer.Bottom Line: Resumes are as individual as people. Let yours represent you, your skills and accomplishments while highlighting your strengths. WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT STEPS???? Use the information in this packet to put together your basic resume. Use a BLANK WORD DOCUMENT, not templates that are available online!! Templates are very “set” – stubborn, we call them – and allow you little flexibility in formatting. If you see a style you like, print out a sample, but then re-create it in a blank document over which you have complete control. Once your first resume draft is done, email it to one of the Career Services staff members (see front cover for contact info), and give us 2-3 good days and time ranges during which you could meet to discuss your resume. (For those not geographically in the Salem area, we can hold these meetings by phone, while looking at your resume on a computer screen.) We will contact you back with an Outlook meeting invitation and/or an email to confirm a meeting. After the initial meeting, the number of tweaks needed to your resume will depend on each individual document. These may be done strictly over email communications, or we may need to schedule follow-up meetings with you. Career Services maintains a permanent resume file on each Class year, housed on the College server. This allows us to have your resume to refer to employers as appropriate, to prepare for various events in which you might participate, and to have available if a back-up is needed. We keep these documents on file for several years, as there are occasions when an individual loses his/her files due to computer crashes and other mishaps. All of these steps may be repeated as necessary for each different “version” of your resume – as mentioned earlier in this packet, every job for which you apply should have its own unique resume version, created especially for that employer. Good luck as you get started!! We look forward to working with you!!NAMECurrent: Roanoke College PO Box XXX Salem, VA 24153 ? phone ? e-mail Permanent: 1234 Elm Street Richmond, VA 23568 ?
