Welcome to the 2017-2018

Diamond Canyon School Year!

Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year. We are certain the upcoming year will prove to be exciting and challenging as your child grows intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally!

The purpose of this handbook is to familiarize you with the classroom procedures, expectations, and policies as they pertain to all fifth grade classes. Please take the time to go through this with your child. Once you have read the handbook, please sign, and return the student information page at the end of this handbook.

We encourage you to contact us at any time, if you have questions or concerns. E-mail is the most effective way to communicate with us. Diamond Canyon is trying to go paperless as much as possible; therefore the use of email and our class websites will greatly help us in this endeavor.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation this year!

Sincerely,

The Fifth Grade Team

Basic Procedures and Policies

AGENDA

Your child will be provided an agenda to record important information, such as daily assignments, homework, tests, reports, etc. Students are required to fill out the agenda daily and keep it with them at all times. The agenda serves as an organizational tool and will help promote independence. Furthermore, logins and passwords for educational websites, including PowerSchools, will be recorded in their agendas for safe keeping and future reference.

TEACHER WEBSITES

The fifth grade websites provide valuable information regarding assignments, upcoming events, helpful links and other pertinent information. For example, all Eureka math curriculum is linked to, and can be printed from, Mrs. Uebelherr’s website. Please check our websites regularly, as they are constantly being updated with import information.

PERSONAL ITEMS

Toys and other distracting objects are not to be brought to school, as stated in the Diamond Canyon Handbook, and they will be taken from the student. Please refer to the DVUSD Handbook for a complete list of items to be left home, this includes but is not limited to, fidget spinners, thinking putty and fidget cubes. The following is an article regarding fidget items and their counter productivity:

Electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, etc., will be confiscated and sent to the office if used during inappropriate times. Please note there will be times they will be used for educational purposes in the classroom. These items must remain off and in the student’s backpack unless instructed otherwise. Students are not allowed to use social media of ANY KIND while on campus, including taking pictures. Diamond Canyon and its teachers are not responsible for any personal items that are lost, stolen, confiscated or damaged on school property.

FORGOTTEN ITEMS

Per Diamond Canyon policy, forgotten homework assignments, backpacks, projects, and musical instruments will not be accepted or held for students in the office. Diamond Canyon will only allow medically necessary items and lunch to be dropped off for students. Additionally, items forgotten in the classroom will be brought to the lost and found every Friday. Please encourage your child to take their belongings home nightly, including musical instruments.

BATHROOM POLICY

Students may sign out when needing to use the restroom. Unless it is an emergency, only one boy and one girl may leave class at a time. We ask that students try to use the restroom quickly between classes in order to limit class time that is missed. Sign out logs will be monitored for over use and abuse.

SNACKS AND WATER

Students are encouraged to bring water bottles. No drinks other than plain water are allowed according to the school policy. Students will not be able to eat snacks in the classroom due to health concerns.

SUPPLIES

Just another reminder, all students need to have two sharpened pencils, 2 working dry erase markers & eraser, a grading pen and a highlighter with them at all times.

Homework

Homework will be given mostly in reading and math and will be very important for students to complete. Occasionally large projects will be assigned in any subject area. Technology is an integrated part of our curriculum, and therefore, often times homework will require the use of a computer and/or the internet. Many of the websites that will be assigned for homework can be accessed on a tablet or phone.

Furthermore, if you do not have access to the internet, students may use the school library at lunch or the public library at Boulder Creek has internet as well.

Are there any areas of concern, which may affect your child’s academic progress?

What are your child’s strengths?

What are your child’s hobbies?

Parents are strongly encouraged to monitor their child’s progress on a weekly basis through PowerSchools. If you do not have an access code, please contact the office. Student PowerSchool logins are now the same as their school computer logins. Upon logging into PowerSchools, you will have the option to have your child’s grades e-mailed to you daily, weekly or monthly. Checking your child’s grades via PowerSchools will support communication and will help to promote academic success for your child.

(Please sign and return only this page to your child’s homeroom teacher.)

I have read over the policies of the fifth grade team at Diamond Canyon and I have discussed them with my child.
