WELCOME

Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached. But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus, our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him more faithfully and effectively.

SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

PRELUDE “Bourée in G” Handel

PRAYER HYMN “All Creatures of Our God and King” (v.1) 455

All creatures of our God and King,

Lift up your voice and with us sing,

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou burning sun and golden beam,

Thou silver moon with softer gleam,

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

WE COME TO WORSHIP GOD

CALL TO WORSHIP

Worship the Lord with gladness.

Come into God’s presence with singing!

People: For the Lord is a gracious God,

whose mercy is everlasting;

and whose faithfulness endures to all generations.

*HYMN “O God of Bethel, by Whose Hand” 269

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts:

Cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires,

that with reverent and humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults,

confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen.

SILENT PRAYER

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GIVE GLORY TO GOD “Glory Be to the Father” 577

Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen.

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Pg. 513 Psalm 86

1 Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,

for I am poor and needy.

2 Preserve my life, for I am devoted to you;

save your servant who trusts in you.

You are my God; 3 be gracious to me, O Lord,

for to you do I cry all day long.

4 Gladden the soul of your servant,

for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,

abounding in steadfast love to all who call on you.

6 Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;

listen to my cry of supplication.

7 In the day of my trouble I call on you,

for you will answer me.

8 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,

nor are there any works like yours.

9 All the nations you have made shall come

and bow down before you, O Lord,

and shall glorify your name.

10 For you are great and do wondrous things;

you alone are God.

11 Teach me your way, O Lord,

that I may walk in your truth;

give me an undivided heart to revere your name.

12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,

and I will glorify your name forever.

13 For great is your steadfast love toward me;

you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

14 O God, the insolent rise up against me;

a band of ruffians seeks my life,

and they do not set you before them.

15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me;

give your strength to your servant;

save the child of your serving girl.

17 Show me a sign of your favor,

so that those who hate me may see it and be put to shame,

because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Pg. 983 Romans 8:12-25

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20 for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

SERMON “Subject to Hope” Kevin Ireland

MOMENT FOR QUIET REFLECTION

*HYMN “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past” 210

Joys and concerns may be written on the pew cards and given to the ushers during this hymn. They will be shared during the prayers of the people, unless you mark them confidential.

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus

Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

We welcome Kevin Ireland to our pulpit this morning. Kevin is a Senior at Princeton Theological Seminary and a candidate for ordination in the PC(USA). Kevin grew up in Ewing NJ, graduated from Eastern University and has served for nine years as a youth director in Ringoes, NJ before pursuing seminary. He is married to his high-school sweetheart Tina and has two clever daughters: Vivian (5) and Coraline (2). Kevin enjoys reading comic books and is a so-so pinball player. This summer he is guest preaching at churches that have invited him in order to provide for his family as he follows a call to pastoral ministry and appreciates the opportunity to worship together with you today.

Our mission focus for the month of July is the Presbytery of Monmouth. The purpose of the Presbytery of Monmouth is equipping ministers and congregations to strengthen God's people for ministry in obedience to Jesus Christ. All money earmarked for Mission this month will support the work of the Presbytery of Monmouth. Please give generously!
