Dear Parents,

I hope you are excited about the upcoming summer vacation. We are wrapping up an awesome school year and already making plans for the 17-18 school year. The staff will be busy throughout the summer to improve in every area to ensure an even better 17-18 school year.

I have three main reasons for this letter. First, I want to welcome your child to Advanced Pre-Algebra for the 2017-18 school year. As your child's Advanced Pre-Algebra teacher, I will be a member of his/her support team. I look forward to the time we will spend building relationships and investigating mathematics. As I make preparations for the year ahead, it is my hope to ensure our year together offers a fresh and appropriately challenging approach.

Second, I wish to briefly address calculator usage in Advanced Pre-Algebra. It is my desire to assist your child in setting suitable guidelines for the wise use of calculators. When used appropriately calculators foster exploration and development of mathematical concepts, enhance problem solving, and increase efficacy. Basic fact mastery and flexible computational skills, including mental computation, remain important goals of our curriculum. For times in which these skills are the objective, the calculator will simply be off limits. Again, the goal is to help your child learn to make wise choices about when and how to use the calculator. As an Advanced Pre-Algebra student, your child will need a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. Be assured this is not a one year investment, as this calculator is also used in science and math classes grades nine through twelve. To protect this asset, it is highly recommended that your child place his/her full name on both the calculator and the calculator cover.

Finally, I want to communicate summer math requirements for Advanced PreAlgebra students. In hopes of shoring-up foundational skills and continuing distributed practice during summer break, I have created a document with representative samples of many of the basic skills needed for success in pre-algebra. These skills and concepts were addressed in FRA's Advanced Math 6 course. Please find attached that document, Foundational Skills, as well as an answer key. An understanding of these concepts will prove beneficial to your child's mathematical growth in the coming year.

My suggestions for completing these exercises are as follows: Allocate 15 to 30 minutes to complete each of the eight sections. Do this over a period of several days. Upon completion of each section, use the answer key provided to check and correct each exercise. This should inform students regarding their understanding and mastery of the concepts. If additional attention to concepts is needed, students may consult the Adanced Course 2 textbook, Math Connects Course 2, for explanations, examples, and additional practice exercises. Students should have access to this textbook on their iPads. New students may wish to contact the technology help desk for access to this text. Also, assistance @ may prove beneficial.

Students will be required to submit a hard copy of the Foundational Skills Worksheets on opening day, Tuesday, August 15, for a quiz grade of the 1st semester. Daily quizzes will be administered during the opening weeks of school. (See FRA Summer Math: Advanced Pre-Algebra document for specifics.) Enjoy your summer break and I look forward to seeing you in August! Sincerely,

Chris Hart

SUMMER MATH: ADVANCED PRE-ALGEBRA

This Foundational Skills Packet includes practice exercises designed to assist you in securing and maintaining prerequisite skills essential for your success in Advanced Pre-Algebra. Allocating time over the summer months to complete these exercises will support your transition back into the classroom in August.

DIRECTIONS:

Read the letter on pages 2 and 3 of this document. Although this letter is directed to your parents, you need to be apprised of its content.

Complete each part of the Foundational Skills Packet: Part 1: Decimals Part 2: Fractions Part 3: Decimal/Fraction Equivalents Part 4: Ratio, Proportion, Percent Part 5: Integers Part 6: Expressions Part 7: Equations Part 8: Problem Solving Part 9: Inequalities

Carefully read and follow directions. Use a pencil so you can easily erase if you make mistakes. DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR. Clearly document your work. Check for reasonableness. Use a red lead or red ink pen and the answer key provided to make

corrections. The answer keys may be access through this link:

Upon completion, print the Foundation Skills: Part 1 through Part 8 and be prepared to submit on the first day of school.
