REGULATED SPECIES MATERIALS AND CITES PERMITS

The export of a lot from the United States or import into certain countries may be subject to export or import regulations, licensure and/or other restrictions; in particular, lots containing plant or animal materials such as ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoiseshell, coral, whalebone or certain types of woods, irrespective of age or value, may require the granting of one or more export or import licenses or certificates, or may be banned from import altogether by some countries. Moreover, the ability to obtain an export license or certificate does not insure the ability to obtain an import license or certificate in another country. Lots that contain such regulated species materials may also not be eligible for exportation or for re-importation into the United States if they are not at least 100 years of age, and, under current law, lots containing African Elephant Ivory may no longer be re-imported into the United States regardless of age. In addition, resales of lots containing certain regulated species materials may be subject to restrictions in some jurisdictions.

Lots noted in the catalog with a Y next to the lot number contain one or more such regulated plant or animal materials. It is the buyer's responsibility to investigate any such restrictions and to obtain any relevant export or import licenses. Please note that this process is governed by local authorities and may take considerable time. Regardless of any delay in the obtaining of an export or import license or certificate or denial of a license's or certificate's issuance, purchased lots shall be paid for in accordance with the Conditions of Sale, and any such delay or denial shall not serve as the basis for cancellation of any sale. Prospective buyers are advised to obtain information from the relevant regulatory authorities regarding export and import restrictions, requirements, and costs prior to bidding.

Prospective buyers should also check with their local (e.g. state) regulatory authorities regarding any local restrictions and/or permit requirements that may apply with respect to purchases of regulated species materials, including without limitation purchases of items containing elephant ivory or rhino horn. For example, we are advised that New York buyers of any lot containing elephant or mammoth ivory or rhino horn will be responsible for obtaining a New York State permit before taking possession of the lot within New York State, and that the State of New Jersey has banned the import of items containing elephant or marine mammal ivory or rhino horn into that state.

Jay C. Leff (1925-2000)

Polymath Jay C. Leff was a banker by profession (at age 29, he became the youngest bank president in the country), and a collector by passion.

He began collecting stamps, coins, and magic tricks as a boy, and progressed from there to chess sets, what were then called Oriental Decorative Arts, and books (at one time, he owned what was probably the finest collection of H. P. Lovecraft first editions and ephemera in existence). But, it was when he discovered so-called "primitive art" that he found his true calling.

The Leff Collection of Tribal and Ethnographic Art (although he preferred the term Exotic Art) was begun in the 1950s at a time when this field of art collecting was still nascent. Leff quickly determined that the Eurocentric esthetic was a great esthetic, but far from the only esthetic. To Leff, primitive peoples, tribal groups, and exotic cultures all expressed their own esthetic of value and produced both artistic masterpieces and master artists.

Esthetics were what drove Leff as he curated his world-renowned collection that ultimately numbered some 4,000 pieces. While his first love was Pre-Columbian art -- particularly Olmec, and his second was African, these were followed closely and increasingly by his affinity for Native American works. But the collection did not stop there and included important examples from Oceania, Eastern and Central Asia, and Ancient Europe, as well.

Leff was both a pioneer and a taste-maker in this now highly respected area of art and scholarship. His legacy lives on today in countless museums and private collections that are fortunate enough to claim ownership of beautiful and important objects that carry the Leff provenance.

Robert G. Boucher (1924-1996)

Robert G. Boucher was born in Connecticut in 1924, and after serving in the US Army during the tail end of WWII, earned his bachelor's degree in Economics from Middlebury College in Vermont. After graduation, Boucher visited Denver, Colorado, and immediately fell in love with the West.

Settling in Denver permanently, Boucher swiftly became taken with Western art as well as Native American art and objects, spurring on a deep dive into collecting which spanned 20 years of his lifetime. His appreciation for the art and objects themselves was bolstered by his love of the hunt (satisfied by numerous collecting trips across the Southwest throughout his lifetime), as well as his passion for meeting the artists who crafted the art and objects he purchased whenever possible.

The selection of textiles that are offered in this auction (lots 165-178) are only a small glimpse into Boucher's years of careful acquisition, but illustrate his curatorial eye for fine Navajo weavings across a broad spectrum of styles and ages.
