Just 50 miles from Cuzco, Machu Picchu (ca. 1450) was unknown to the outside world until its rediscovery by Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Day 1: Depart the U.S. for Lima, Peru Upon arrival tonight transfer directly to the hotel.

Day 2: Lima Learn about the journey ahead at a briefing with your tour director, then embark on a tour of colonial Lima. A highlight is a special inside visit to one of the oldest colonial homes in South America, Casa Aliaga, built in 1535 and still owned by the same family. Another highlight is the Larco Herrera Museum, whose ceramics collection features renowned Moche pottery from the north coast of Peru dating to the first millennium A.D. Enjoy a welcome lunch at the museum and an evening at leisure. (B,L)

Day 3: Cuzco and Sacred Valley Early this morning transfer to the airport for the brief flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival visit the sacred sites of Koricancha and Santo Domingo then continue to the beautiful Sacred Valley, a region of Inca sites and traditional villages. After visiting the colorful Indian market at Pisac, reach your hotel in the midafternoon and begin to acclimate to the elevation. Attend a native "Offering to the Earth" ceremony this evening, followed by dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Sacred Valley Set out today for the Inca farming town of Chinchero, set on a broad plateau

overshadowed by a snowcapped mountain. Here residents live much as their ancestors did. Stop in the lovely colonial town of Maras to see where indigenous peoples found their source of salt, and continue on to the circular terraces of Moray. Spend the afternoon exploring Ollantaytambo, known for its awe-inspiring Inca ruins. Return to your hotel late this afternoon and dine there tonight. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes Early this morning board a train for the 1?-hour journey to Aguas Calientes. After lunch, board a bus for Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, enjoy your first guided visit of the stunning "Lost City of the Incas." Due to its small size, your group will move nimbly through the ruins and have the leisure to absorb the beauty of this site whose original purpose remains a mystery. Spend the night at a hotel near the archaeological site. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Machu Picchu and Cuzco This morning, when the early morning sun bathes the stones in a haunting, evocative light and before the crowds of day trippers arrive, take your second guided tour of this amazing World Heritage site. After lunch in Aguas Calientes return to Cuzco by train, arriving early evening. (B,L)

Day 9: Puno and Lake Titicaca Spend the day exploring the fascinating area of Lake Titicaca; at 12,500 feet above sea level, it is among the world's highest navigable lakes. Bolivia's snowcapped Cordillera range is a striking backdrop to the deep blue of Lake Titicaca. Board a boat to visit the Floating Island of Los Uros, where the top-hatted Uros people live on islands made of reeds that grow in the lake's shallows. Continue to Taquile Island, known for the high quality textiles crafted by local artisans. Tonight celebrate your Peruvian adventure at a farewell dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 10: Puno and Lima This morning visit the mysterious chullpas, or burial towers, at Sillustani overlooking Lake Umayo. Then fly to Lima, and check into a day room at an airport hotel. Late this evening depart for the airport for return flights to the U.S. (B,L)

Smithsonian Expert

David Scott Palmer, professor of international relations and political science at Boston University, is the founding co-director of its Peru Summer Program. He earned his B.A. from Dartmouth, his M.A. from Stanford, and his Ph.D. from Cornell, and served in the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers in Peru. Scott is the author of numerous articles and books about Latin America and a member of the Academic Reserve for the National Intelligence Council. He will lead the April and September departures (see page 6). The other departures will be led by comparable experts.
