 PreK Choice Board for Week of April 27 Please read a book for 20 minutes every day and select 2 activities a day! Also, feel free to send us pictures—we love to get them! Jack and the Bean Stalk read aloud: you listen to the story, retell it to a grownup by explaining who the characters were, what the setting was, what the problem was, and what the solution was. CLL5.4cJack and the Bean Stalk CraftIn the Jack in the Beanstalk story, the boy plants a magic seed. A beanstalk grows into the clouds where a giant lives in a castle. Transform an empty paper towel roll into a beanstalk. Decorate the paper towel roll with markers, crayons, paper.Place a paper plate on the up of the paper towel roll. Create a castle on the paper plate.CR2.4aBean Sprouting Experiment 1. Ask an adult for a dried bean ( any type will work)2. Place the dried bean or seed between damp paper towels. 3. Place paper towels and bean into a ziploc bag4. Put the ziploc bag in a sunny place.5. Watch and record changes that you notice in the bean each day.Within 5 days you will notice the bean has sprouted.Plant the bean in a small cup of soil. Continue to water the plant and watch changes.SC3.4aRecycled Egg Carton Games1. Find an empty egg carton.2. Collect small household objects (coins, buttons, beans)3. Use the egg carton to Sort the objects by size, color,shape.Create a pattern with the objects.4.Describe your collection to a family member.Mancala is a game that you can play with a friend, the egg carton and 24 beans. Start with 4 beans in each egg cup.Move by putting 1 bean in every cup until your hand is empty.Collect the most beans to win!MA4.4aCreate a Caterpillar!Use materials you have at home to make a caterpillar! Ideas: the egg carton you used from the row above, empty plastic eggs from Easter, pipe cleaners, plastic or paper cups. Add some details such as eyes and legs with crayons or markers. CR2.3a Pine Cone Experiments While on a walk, gather some pinecones and discuss similarities and differences with a grownup. Have your grownup help you to set up a container with water and an empty container. Put the different pine cones in water with tongs and see what happens to them (they close up). Then put them in the dry container and see what happens. When you are done with your pinecones, you can put peanut butter and birdseed on each “branch” to make hanging bird feeders. SC1.3dOpposites GameUse a small household objects ( toy, box) and play the Opposite Game. Can you use the object to demonstrate opposites? Examples: High/low, up/down, above/below, front/back, right/left, Try emotional opposites! Happy/sad, worried/calm, rest/busy, frown/smile.Try texture opposites! hard/soft, rough/smooth, rigid/flimsy, bumpy/flat, wet/dryCD-MA5.4aCaterpillar Shoes read aloud this story, Caterpillar shares his shoes with friends. Do you have any old shoes you can share? Make a bag of clothes you have outgrown to give to a smaller child.CLL5.4dI Spy…… A Letter!Provide a highlighter/marker and newspaper or magazine. Have your child find and highlight specific letters or words in the print material. Gather the following materials: -Drinking straw -hairdryer -feather or something else light like doll clothes or a piece of paper-a round ball-Various other household objects Blow air through the straw at the objects. Use the hairdryer to create “wind.” Are there some that only move with the hairdryer wind? Why?SC4.4bTwenty Questions- Modified for PreK First, encourage your child to hide an item behind the screen without you seeing it. Ask your child questions about the item to try to guess what it is.( "Can you eat it? Does it make a sound if you shake it? Is it rough or smooth?)" After 10 questions reveal what the object is and discuss how the questions helped you learn more about the hidden item.
