Summer Arrival There are two things you can always count on in summer, increased temperatures and decreasing pre-owned values. In terms of Average Wholesale Prices (AWP), Cruiser categories (Domestic & Metric) both decreased by ~6% and ~8.5 respectively while Sport and Dual Sport categories experienced insignificant fluctuations compared to the previous three months. When comparing June 2019 to June 2018, both Domestic & Metric Cruisers had a slight (~1%) decrease in AWP, the Sport category increased by 3.6%, and Dual Sport AWP dropped by 9%.

Product and Attribute Mix Average model age varied for units sold in June more than prior years, with Metric Cruisers and Sport Bikes growing to about 6 months older than last year. After several months of relative stability, average vehicle mileage continued to be stable except for Domestic Cruisers, whose average mileage decreased over 10%. Product mix shifted slightly in Q2 with Metric Cruiser and Sport bikes increasing product mix share by 3% versus Q1.

Volume Highs and Additional Opportunities June was one of the higher volume months NPA has had so far in 2019. Coupled with stable Price-to-Book ratios (average wholesale price vs NADA Clean Wholesale) across nearly all categories, the 2019 pre-owned powersports marketplace continues to show strength. That said, dealers are stocked up for the summer so buyers will be very selective on their purchases, causing the seasonal decline we see every year. We expect this summer to perform similar to previous years with a slight increase in overall demand for pre-owned product.
