Environmental Care April, 2015Always check each patient room door to identify whether precautions are required. If you have questions, ask the charge nurse or the nurse caring for the patient prior to entering a patient room. Contact your supervisor if you have further questions.Always check the door for a precaution sign. Follow instructions as shown on the sign.Contact Precautions - This is to ensure you are not transporting germs from one room to another. Before entering the room, clean your hands and then put on an isolation gown and gloves. Remove your gown and gloves and clean your hands as you leave the room. Patients on contact precautions most often have MRSA or VRE. These germs are dangerous to patients with a suppressed immune system and usually do not cause infections in healthy people.C Diff is identified by the display of the Contact Precautions sign and a second sign in the room stating you should wash your hands with soap and water and you should clean with Oxivir. These patients are on isolation for diarrhea that may be caused by C. difficile. Purell is not effective against C. diff spores. Droplet Precautions – Generally for respiratory conditions such as Influenza (flu) that generally travel approximately six feet from the patient. Clean your hands, put on an isolation gown, gloves and a mask with a face shield before entering the room.Airborne Precautions – This is used for air borne germs that can remain suspended in the air and travel further. This precaution is most often used for patients with confirmed or suspected TB. Patients suspected of having TB are put on Airborne Precautions while testing is performed. Precautions will be removed if TB is ruled out. Last year, only 10% of the patients tested for TB were positive. If you enter a room without PPE and later find out the Patient was on precautions, contact your Supervisor who can contact HEIC at x5-8384 during working hours. Off-hours, call the Hospital Operator and request that the HEIC Nurse on-call be paged.I:/Data/Safety Committee/Patient Room Precautions ................
