Lesson Plan: Prefix/Root Word/Suffix

Lesson Plan: Prefix/Root Word/Suffix

Item Bank

Grade Level: 6

Objectives (Purpose) – To practice/understand the concept of prefixes/root words/suffixes

Procedures –

1. Put the word incredible on the board.

Ask students to find the prefix, root word, and suffix. Then remind students what each part is. A prefix is a letter or group of letters attached to the beginning of a word that partly gives it meaning, a root word is a base word which could stand on its own or be altered with a prefix or suffix, and a suffix is added to the end of the word. Be sure to explain that every prefix, root word and suffix have meanings.

2. Explain to students that in pairs they will be using real prefixes, root words, and suffixes to create real or made-up words. They will receive a packet with cards which will need to be cut out. One-third of the words will be prefixes, one-third will be root words and one-third will be suffixes. They should separate the cards into the three categories upside-down. Students will then choose one from each pile and will have a word, either real or possibly not. Either way it can be defined because each part of the word has a real meaning. Some will make more sense than others, while some are sure to make students laugh!

3. Have students complete the attached organizer to list all of their words and their meanings.

Extensions –

• Students can create dictionaries with their new words using an entry in the dictionary as a model.

Materials and Resources –

• Packet of cards

• Organizer

• Pencil

Timing –60-120minutes (It really depends on how many students are expected to create.)

Assessment –
