A. Focus/connections/anticipatory set

The teacher will use an overhead projector to display: TAKS Daily Practice

Transparency 6.4 (The Rise of Christianity).

The teacher will instruct the class to record the questions in the students’ History Facts of

the Day spiral notebook as numbers 22 and 23 respectively.

B. Instructional activities

(demonstrations, lectures, examples, hands-on experiences, role play, active learning experience, art, music, modeling, discussion, reading, listening, viewing, etc.)

1. Objective: Interpret maps tracing the spread of Christianity

2. Procedures: The students will:

(1) research the rise of Christianity and then complete

Handout 1(rewrite sentences to make them correct).

(2) draw and label a map showing the spread of Christianity to A. D.

3. Modeling: The teacher will use an overhead projector to display a transparency with

the following statement:

“Christianity, which rose out of Egypt and was founded by Moses, had

its roots in Roman polytheism.”

The teacher will instruct the students to read the sentence and rewrite it

to make it a true statement.

The teacher will randomly select students to share their corrections.

The teacher will display a transparency showing the corrected

statement.

“Founded by Jesus, Christianity rose out of Palestine and was firmly

rooted in the Jewish religion.”

The teacher will state the ability to separate those statements that can

be proven to be true from those that reflect a personal viewpoint is a

skill needed in studying cultural changes which include religion. Today

our lesson focuses on the rise of Christianity.

C. Guided activity or strategy

The teacher will facilitate Prentice Hall Presentation Pro, Chapter 6, Section 4: The

Rise of Christianity.

IV. TAKS Preparation

A. Transition to TAKS context

The teacher will state geographic skills and tools to collect, analyze and interpret data are

very helpful in Social Studies. These skills enable the student to create maps and have a

visual concept of the vast area included in the spread of Christianity.
