THE POSITION

Birchwood School of Hawken is seeking a Director of Development to manage all aspects of Birchwood’s fundraising program. This role involves organizing all fundraising initiatives, working with School leadership, managing the Annual Fund and building relationships with alumni, parents, and friends. The Director of Development will also create and implement the School’s first major giving program. This individual must be able to assimilate into one of the most diverse communities in Northeast Ohio. Seventy percent of Birchwood students are children of first or second generation US citizens from around the world.

The specific responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Create and implement a strategic fundraising plan for the School, as well as create a comprehensive annual calendar.

• Identify individual and corporate prospects and develop strategies to cultivate those relationships.

• Personally solicit a portfolio of donors.

• Manage solicitations for the annual giving program which includes the following constituencies: alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty/staff and friends of the School.

o Strategize, conceptualize and implement programs to maximize participation and dollars.

o Focus on renewing and upgrading current donors, as well as increasing the overall participation rate of all constituencies through the acquisition of new donors to the Annual Fund. This is accomplished through direct mail and online platforms, as well as personal solicitations by the Director of Development.

o Create and prepare all Annual Fund solicitations and promotion materials, both print and electronic.

o Articulate the strong Case for Support for the Annual Fund.

o Manage communication of Annual Fund progress and results to the Birchwood community.

• Develop endowment and programmatic needs, along with their corresponding Case for Support.

• Partner with the Parents’ Association by securing sponsorship support for their events, including the IFA (International Festival and Auction), the 5K and other events as needed.

• Work closely with and report to Charles Debelak, head of Birchwood School of Hawken and Kathleen Guzzi, co-director of advancement, Hawken School.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidate must have at least three years of experience in fund raising and a Bachelor’s degree. Ability to have an impact and effectively work with staff, volunteers, parents, alumni and friends of the School is essential. Qualified candidate must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Results-driven and highly organized, this energetic team member will also be social media savvy and skilled at database mining.
