Materials Needed:
- “How Full is Your Bucket?” by Tom Rath
- “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud
- Bucket coloring sheets
Pre-Assessment:
Anticipatory Set:
Write “good citizen” on the board inside a bubble. Ask the class what a good citizen is & write answers around the bubble, connecting the descriptions with lines. Do the same with “community”. Leave this up on the board to return to later.
Activity I: Read “How Full is Your Bucket?”
Bring the students to the carpet while you read. Stop the story at different intervals and ask questions. Students can whisper answers to the person next to them or raise their hands to share.
Activity II: Discussion Questions
- Why did Grandpa tell Felix that he dipped from his sister’s bucket?
- What happened at breakfast?
- What does it mean when drops spill out of your bucket?
- What made drops land in Felix’s bucket?
- How did Felix act when his bucket was full?
- What is something that you did today to fill your bucket?
Activity III: Read “Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?”
Have students return to their seats and pass out the bucket worksheets. Before coloring, they should fill in the blank “I can be a bucket filler by______”. Have some students share some “bucket filler” ideas.

(Write the new answers in a different color on the board)
- What does it mean to be a good citizen?
