Dear Parents,

SonShine Preschool

2020-2021

Welcome to SonShine Preschool of Fletcher United Methodist Church! We are delighted to have you and your child in our program. The safety and well-being of your child are our first priorities.

We strive to provide an atmosphere where children have the opportunity to explore, create and grow in a nurturing and stimulating environment. We want to meet the needs of each individual child and provide a high- quality learning experience while providing an atmosphere that encourages spiritual, emotional, physical, social, and intellectual growth.

It is our goal to build a strong rapport with the children and their families. This allows children to feel loved and secure at preschool and to begin a lifetime of learning.

Our staff is always available to answer questions or discuss your child’s needs. If we work together, and make home and school a team, we truly believe a solution will be found for any needs that your child may have. We want you and your child to always feel welcome and at home here at SonShine.

We are looking forward to a year filled with learning, laughter, and love!

What Will My Child Do at Preschool?

The curriculum at SonShine Preschool is biblically based. Our goal is to give all children an introduction to the Bible and its teaching in an age appropriate way. The curriculum also includes a weekly theme.

All lesson plans and the set up of each classroom is catered for the development of the child as whole in an age appropriate setting.

Weekly lesson plans and monthly calendars are posted in each classroom.

Planned within the framework of philosophy and purpose, SonShine Preschool curriculum includes the following:

Circle Time – a time of learning, sharing, conversation, and stories

Teacher Directed Activities – crafts, water/sand tables, working

with manipulatives (which help develop hand/eye coordination

and small motor skills)

Outside Time - free play and structured activities (helps to

develop large motor skills and coordination)

Chapel – 11:30 AM every Monday

Free Play – helps to develop social skills

As cars are coming and going in the parking lot, we ask that you hold your child’s hand for safety reasons.

Emergency Information

Parents must fill out an emergency contact information form. This data must be updated immediately if changes occur. Emergency information includes name and phone number of your doctor, phone number and place of employment where you can be reached, any allergies, and names and phone numbers of emergency contact persons. We must be able to reach the parents or designated contact persons at all times.

If a child is to be withheld from a legal parent, the parent having custody must furnish a copy of the official papers to be kept in the child’s file.

Illness and Medication

Sick children belong at home where they can get the rest and treatment that they need to improve. For the safety of your child and other children, we ask that you help us maintain this policy. Please do not send a child to preschool who shows signs of illness or who has an infectious disease or when any of the following occur:

Fever and sore throat

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Flushed skin or unidentified rash

Discolored nasal drainage

Children should be kept home 24 hours after the last time a fever is present and 24 hours after the last incident of vomiting or diarrhea.

No medications will be administered by the teachers or director. First aid will be given for minor injuries. In case of serious injury, the parent will be notified immediately and a written report will be given to the parent to sign.

Please report to the teacher any time a child has contracted a communicable disease so that we may inform the parents of the other children of their exposure.

Should a child become ill while at school, we will call you immediately to pick up your child.

Clothing

Dress your child comfortably for preschool. Play clothes the child can easily handle are recommended. All outer wear of the students, including sweaters, hats, coats, rain gear, gloves, jackets, etc. should all be labeled with the child’s name.

Also, an extra set of clothing for your child should be on hand.

Snacks

Snacks will be provided by the parent. Please send a healthy snack and drink (juice box, etc.) with your child each day. Lunch boxes may be used for your child’s snack. Maker sure your child’s name is on the lunch box. Please DO NOT send candy or soda.

Holiday Parties and Birthdays

Holiday parties will be celebrated at school with parent participation always welcomed. Birthdays may be celebrated at school during snack time. Parents will be responsible for making arrangements and notifying the teacher.

Field Trips

Trips will be taken during the year in 4-year-old classes only. A parent or guardian must accompany their child on the field trips. A notification slip will be sent home before each field trip.

Snow Days

If there is snow or inclement weather in the forecast, we follow Henderson County Schools in making any decisions in school delays or closings. We will use our automated calling system to inform you of closings or delays. This information will also be added to Facebook and will run with the school closings list on

News 13 WLOS.

Behavior and Discipline

Positive reinforcement will be used in disciplining your child. If a child is hurting himself/herself or others, he/she will be removed from the situation and told why he/she is not allowed to continue in the activity for the moment (a time-out approach). Most discipline problems can be corrected by using positive approaches rather than negative comments.

We DO NOT use physical punishment or physical isolation.

Inappropriate behavior could result in:

• a verbal warning to the child

• time out within the group

• a note sent home to the parent or a conference with the parent

• dismissal, if the child’s behavior proves dangerous or disruptive to himself/ herself or others, and the above alternatives have failed, and after consulting with the child’s parents.

Because our children are so dear and precious to us, it is our duty to protect and take good care of them. We are obligated by law to report child neglect and abuse to the proper authorities when observed by us.

Classroom Visits

Our school has an “open door” policy for parents and you are welcome to visit in the classroom at any time to observe or to share something with the children. We do ask that you not plan to visit for the first three weeks of school to allow all the children time to adjust to their new situation.

After School Play Time

We ask that you do not allow your child to play on the preschool playground after school hours due to safety concerns.

Please feel free to take your child to Kate’s Park for after school play.

Lunch Bunch Program
