I am writing to remind you of the importance of some summer work, to communicate the school’s expectations, and to share some helpful resources.Research on summer reading shows that children who do not read in the summer often lose two to three months of reading skills. Early readers can regress to pre-reading levels. Students who do read throughout the summer don’t experience this regression. In fact, they often gain as much as a month of reading proficiency. This “summer slide” is real. We are happy that our kids are on the move and enjoying summer days and nights; but we urge families to find ways to regularly work reading and math into summer plans or we will suffer the consequences.Mrs. Gannon, who has a real understanding of the reading levels, personalities and preferences of each class, has prepared a customized book list that should be a huge help in finding just-right books. We have also attached other supports for parents. Some parents like the convenience of summer practice workbooks. These are easy to travel with and most children find a weekly goal (i.e. – five pages of reading and math) easy to independently manage. We have provided some links. Other families prefer online practice and games so we have also included many websites that have been recommended by teachers. It might be wise to set weekly goals for this practice as well. Lastly, we also have included some reading programs to encourage students to read this summer. We ask parents to customize what works for your children and your family’s summer plans, but to please ensure that there is regular practice occurring.We want to keep summer learning fun and easy. It does require a membership.?This website has games for younger students. The games focus on very basic math and reading skills. It is free to use. ? This website has different options for worksheets that can be printed for practicing reading passages and answering questions to check comprehension, Math Websites website is for math practice. It is free to join. You can upgrade to a premium account. Some classes already have their own log ins and memberships. math videos and activities. The video teaches, and then the students practice. using IXL, you must use the link above in order for LFS usernames and passwords to work. This site it helpful for practicing math, reading, and grammar skills at each grade level. - Interactive math games - Interactive math games, can choose grade level as well as skill level, “easy,” “medium,” or, “hard.” This website has all different types of mind puzzles, these are fun away to engage and challenge your brain- different levels available. Summer Reading ProgramsScholastic Reading Program- Girl-?Select locations will feature in-store Summer Reading Bookmark crafts. Girls can make and decorate a pretty bookmark inspired by American Girl activity books. These events are free and open to the public for girls 8 and up. Also, from May 1 through August 26, American Girl will donate $1 from every book purchased through American Girl to Save the Children’s US Literacy Program.Barnes & Noble Imagination Destination?– This?program begins May 20th and runs through Sept 2nd. Kids can earn a FREE book after they read eights books and log them on the reading sheet. This is for grades K-5.Book Adventure?– This is a free program offered by Sylvan Learning. Kids in grades K-8 can search for books, read?them offline, come back to quiz on what they’ve read,?and earn prizes for their reading success. Prizes include chocolate bars, temporary tattoos, Highlights magazine, and more.Chuck E. Cheese?– Earn 10 FREE tokens each time your child reads for 2 weeks in a row. Complete the form to claim the free tokens. HEB still?has last year’s?reading log online, but hopefully it should be updated soon.New York Times Summer Reading Contest?–?Every week from June 13 to August 15, teenagers age 13 to 19 years old are invited to choose any piece in The New York Times and write about why it interested them. The blog will choose a weekly winner to feature. Don’t subscribe? The? has a?digital subscription system?in which gives readers free access to 10 articles each month.PBS Kids Summer Reading Camp?– PBS is teaming up with to offer a Summer Reading Camp. They have everything you need to host 10 fun weeks of reading camp. There is a new theme each week with topics like bugs, heros, music, animals and more!But a more sobering trend is the pace of summer learning loss, which we calculated by estimating the ratio of summer loss to school-year gains for each grade. In the summer following third grade, students lose nearly 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math. By the summer after Seventh Grade, students lose on average 36 percent of their school-year gains in reading and a whopping 50 percent of their school-year gains in math. In other words, summer learning loss increases with age through elementary and middle school – a troubling trend that should be examined further. ................
