Lay materials for the activity at small work tables. IntroductionRead a few passages from the book Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae. Talk with the children about the animals featured in the book. What characteristics do they notice about each one? Have any of them seen these animals in real life? Which ones? Where? Tell children that they are going to make their own mini oceans today. ProcedureHave children sit at small work tables. 1. To make an aquarium, decorate the outside of a clean, empty baby-food jar with fish stickers. 2. Put a few small shells and ocean animal figures inside the jar.3. Nearly fill each child’s jar with water. To the water, add a drop or two of food coloring and some blue glitter. 4. Use a hot glue gun to seal the lid of each jar and prevent leaking. Closure and TransitionOnce all of the children have finished their jars, ask them individually what kinds of things they put in their mini ocean. What kinds of ocean animals did you put in your jar? What colors are they? How big do they think they are in real life? Have you ever seen these creatures before, such as at the zoo or aquarium? After discussing each child’s jar, have them put them in their cubbies or lockers to bring home. Tell children that it’s time for circle time and start singing the song “Fish Are Swimming.” Children can sing along as they walk to the circle. Fish Are Swimming...
