My name is Mrs. Carrie Yessler. I will be your child’s teacher this year. I am very excited to begin our new year at St. Edith! I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with you and your child.SessionSt. Edith Catholic Preschool hours are 8:00-11:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Absences Please follow the school policy as stated in the school handbook, which is found on our school website , with regard to days absent. Please call the school office if your child is going to be absent (734) 464-1250.Drop-off ProcedurePlease park in the parking lot nearest the gym and walk your child into school through the front school entry. Please wait in the hallway with your child until we invite you to come into the classroom. The preschool doors will remain closed until 8:00AM. At 8:00, the preschool door will open for morning prayer together in the hallway with students and parents/caregivers. After prayer, students will enter the classroom to start our day. Please refrain from using electronic devices while waiting.1Pick-up ProcedurePlease plan on arriving by 10:55 A.M. to pick up your child. Parents and caregivers will be invited into the classroom at this time for 5 minute overview of our day. Please make sure you allow yourself enough time to arrive for timely pick up of your child. Your child will only be released to names/people listed on the Emergency form. I.D. will be required. Please refrain from using electronic devices while waiting.Please inform us of any carpools you have formed, or if different people will be picking up your child from school. Backpack/Tote BagEach child will need a backpack or tote bag for school everyday. Please make sure your child’s name is on the bag, so we can identify it easily. Please put a change of clothing (pants, shirt, underwear & socks) in a Ziploc bag which will be kept in the backpack. Please make sure items are weather appropriate.ClothingYour child will not wear the school or gym uniform in preschool. Please have your child dress comfortably for school. Some activities are messy. We don’t want children to worry about getting clothes dirty. We will be going outside or to the gym daily. Please dress for the weather. For safety and comfort, socks and tennis shoes or rubber soled shoes. Please do not allow your child to wear sandals or flip flops to school.AllergiesPlease let us know if your child has any allergies that may or may not require a health care plan. It will help to plan our cooking activities.CalendarAt the beginning of each month, you will be emailed a St. Edith Catholic School Calendar from our school. In addition, you will receive a monthly calendar specific to our classroom. This calendar will highlight the daily theme, project and/or event.Superstar/Sharing BagEach day a child will be the “superstar”. The ‘superstar” rings the bell, helps with calendar and is the line leader. Soon the “superstar” will get to bring home the surprise sharing bag. He/she will bring the bag back the next class session with a “surprise” item from home. The item will be shown during group time. Please do not bring treasures, breakables or weapon related items.2SnackA small nutritious snack and clear plastic see-through #5/BPA free water bottle will need to be brought to school each day. Please make this a healthy finger food snack that does not require utensils. Please label your child’s snack bag or lunchbox with his/her name. Some snack suggestions include: Cheese sticks/cubes, whole grain crackers, air popped popcorn, mini bagel w/cream cheese, sliced fruit, bananas, berries, grapes, vegetable sticks, cherry tomatoes, olives/pickles, grilled cheese squares, quesadillas, sandwich squares, granola bars, dried fruit, raisins, hard boiled eggs, unsweetened cereal, rice cakes, jerky, ham/turkey roll ups, trail mix w/o candy, nuts/seeds.BirthdaysEach child is the Superstar on his/her birthday. Summer birthdays will be celebrated on half-birthdays. We will celebrate by singing, wearing a crown and being the “superstar”. Children may bring a small treat or trinket to share with the class on their special day. Please notify me one week in advance if you would like to bring in a celebration treat.Bathroom A group bathroom break will be offered in our daily schedule. Students may use the bathroom as needed. Our teacher’s aide will walk students to the bathroom. Children must be self-sufficient in taking care of themselves in the bathroom.DisciplineThe children will be encouraged to do nothing unkind and nothing that hurts. They will be guided in conflict resolution to promote a positive self esteem.Field TripsAdvanced notice will be given prior to a trip, along with the required permission slip. Parents are welcome to attend field trips with us! A Criminal Background Check, a certificate from the Protecting God’s Children workshop, and a Car Insurance Form must be on record in the office in order to chaperone a field trip. Protecting God’s Children will be offered at St. Edith on Monday, September 29th in the evening. Register for Protecting God’s Children online at or check for other dates and locations. Please see the school office for help or with any questions you may have.3Classroom FeeA classroom fee of $25.00 will be required from each family to help cover the costs of special classroom supplies and projects throughout the year. Please submit the fee in cash only, labeled with your child’s name. Scholastic Book OrdersScholastic Book orders will go home with the option to purchase books. If you choose to place an order, you may only write a check to Scholastic Books for your order, no cash please. An on-line option is also available at readingclub. Our classroom activation code is LMN2L.PROGRAM OVERVIEWCentersSt. Edith Catholic Preschool is a child-oriented, play-based, developmental classroom and offer many choices for the children at various centers. These centers include; art, sand, water, easel painting, housekeeping, dramatic play, workbench, blocks, fine motor activities, puzzles, books, math, science, play-dough, etc.Teacher directed activitiesEach day a teacher directed activity will be offered to your child. Each child will be given the opportunity to participate. These activities may be art, writing, cooking, etc…Please remember that it is the “process and not the “product” that will be stressed.DisciplineThe children will be encouraged to be kind and do nothing that hurts. They will be guided in conflict resolution to promote a positive self esteem.Language ArtsThe students will be using Zoo Phonics to learn letter sounds and help recognize the letter. Each letter is represented by a zoo animal.We also develop language through the use of stories, games, show and tell, dramatic play finger plays and songs.4Fine Motor ActivitiesThe students will be using a variety of activities to strengthen fine motor control and development. We also use puzzles, play-dough, pegboard games and scissors.Gross Motor ActivitiesThe students will be going outside, visiting the gym and doing various floor activities.ArtSome of our art will be open-ended and some will be structured. Please allow your child to tell you about their art. We believe in the process art, not product art. The use and exploration of materials is stressed, not how the art looks.MathWe will incorporate terminology and focus on shapes, numbers, graphing, patterning and more to be consistent with the St. Edith Catholic School math program.ScienceThe students will be doing some simple experiments and observations.WritingHandwriting Without Tears will be used to develop basic handwriting skills. We will do teach a “letter of the week”. The students have the opportunity to practice writing these letters weekly.MusicThe students will experience music through singing, tapes, CDs and instruments.LibraryWe will visit the library once a week beginning in October. Your child will be able to borrow a book weekly and take it home to read and enjoy. We ask that you bring the book back on the following library day.CookingCooking activities will occur periodically in the classroom.
