Primary Care Scholars’ Program

May 21 – June 1, 2007

Pennsylvania State University

College of Medicine

Hershey, Pa 17033

Description:

The Penn State College of Medicine Primary Care Scholars' Program is an exceptional opportunity for undergraduate students to receive exposure to medical school and issues in primary care. During the first week, Scholar students come to Penn State’s College of Medicine campus in Hershey to learn about important issues in health care delivery and primary care, medical school admissions, financial aid, and the medical school's curriculum process. There are numerous opportunities for Scholar students to interact with medical students and faculty and learn about the philosophy and practice of primary care within the disciplines of family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Large and small didactic groups, discussion groups, seminar presentations, and informal gatherings are the methods of instruction.

The second week of the program is a clinical experience in which the student shadows a family physician, general pediatrician, or general internist. If the student chooses, this could be a location near his/her college or hometown.

Applicants:

College students who attend participating partner colleges and universities and who have completed sophomore or junior years are eligible. Post baccalaureate students may also apply. Students apply through their college pre-health advisors, who send the completed applications to the primary care office at Penn State University College of Medicine. A panel, similar in many respects to the admissions committee, reviews the applications and selects approximately 30 students per year to participate in the program.

Special consideration is given to students interested in primary care fields, those who are considered likely to practice in underserved rural or urban settings, and underrepresented minorities.

Content:

Students spend three and a half days at the College of Medicine receiving exposure to primary care physicians in a variety of practice settings, aspects of the medical school application process, an introduction to curriculum including a problem-based learning case discussion, and significant exposure to medical students. A schedule of the most recent Scholar’s Program is included.

This experience is followed by a one-week preceptorship shadowing experience in a primary care physician’s office. Usually the student will locate this office himself/herself, often within the student’s hometown setting.

Registration Fee: FREE

Housing:

If you wish to stay on campus housing is provided for $95.00, payable in advance.

Testimonials from previous student participants:

“I had an awesome time. This program gave us all the opportunity to get to know one another and learn about primary care. I am very glad I was able to be a part of this program and I will highly recommend it to everyone who is interested.”

“I liked that we were able to and encouraged to ask a lot of questions and that they were carefully considered and competently answered. I really liked hearing personal stories from different physicians and to see and hear their first hand reactions and observations about their work. They seemed very honest and also well prepared.”

“I learned so much and the doctors were encouraging and that helped a lot. It feels good to know that there are doctors who want you to succeed.”

“I like how the program integrated faculty as well as student question and answer sessions throughout the week. I enjoyed the trip to the nursing home and practice site. The session on rural primary care was well presented and very influential. I am glad the medical students were able to participate in the evening activities.”

“I liked the comprehensive look at a medical school I wouldn’t normally get before the application process. I enjoyed the question and answer periods as they helped to clear up some uncertainties regarding medical school, the student’s role, and how to prepare. I also enjoyed meeting individuals from across the state that have the same drives and goals as myself. They were all friendly and interesting and I consider myself lucky to have met them.”

“It made me realize the flexibility and satisfaction that primary care medicine provides. Previously, I was unsure about which area of medicine I would like to pursue but this program has strongly made me consider a career in primary care medicine.”
