Primary succession begins on bare rock after a severe disturbance. It begins with pioneer plant species and progresses in complexity until it reaches a climax community. You have learned about the stages of primary succession. Can you put these together to create a model of primary succession?

Directions: Choose materials from your school or home, or, if you prefer, buy some inexpensive items at a craft store that can be molded, cut, or otherwise altered. For example, you could use a shoebox, modeling clay, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, etc. Be creative and resourceful. Use different materials to build a model of primary succession with these stages:

Once you have created your model, label each stage. When you are finished, take a photograph that you can submit to your teacher.
