Dear Cohort XIII:Our December session, I think you will agree, was unusually intense. Thanks to all for great questions and comments. Now we are heading into our last six months together and the time will rocket by.Amended Program CalendarAttached is the most up-to-date program calendar. Of note are:The extended February session (including our time at the Wakefield Inn) will run from 14:00 to 20:15 on Wednesday, February 19; from 9:15 (transferring to Wakefield after lunch) on Thursday, February 20; and from 8:30 until 16:00 at Wakefield on Friday, February 21. If (sigh…) you cannot attend the Wakefield portion, please inform Julie by early January so that we can adjust the groups and avoid incurring unnecessary costs.Our March session will take place in Toronto, running from 10:30 until about 17:00 on Wednesday, March 25; and from 8:30 until about 15:30 on Thursday, March 26. Program for Wednesday and Thursday, January 15 & 16, 2020Our first afternoon will come back to the theme of “Indigenous reconciliation”. Mike DeGagné will join us for 14:15 to discuss Overcoming the Legacy of Colonialism. Mike is currently President of Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario. Earlier he served as Executive Director of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation throughout its sixteen-year history from 1998 to 2014.Daniel Watson, Deputy Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, will speak after the break on Embracing Reconciliation. Daniel previously was President of Parks Canada, Chief Human Resources Officer for the public service at the Treasury Board Secretariat, and Deputy Minister of Western Economic Diversification Canada.After dinner, Stewart Beck will reflect on Asia’s Growing Importance. Stewart is President of the Asia-Pacific Foundation based in Vancouver. Previous to his retirement from the public service Stewart was Canadian High Commissioner to India. Earlier postings included Consul General in Shanghai. This segment will be an opportunity to broaden out from last session’s fascinating discussion of China’s history, governance and place in the world.Thursday morning starting at 9:00 will be devoted to three case studies: Judy Meltzer will present at 9:00 on Carbon Pricing – Is it Worth It? Next, Stéphanie Durand will discuss Sustaining Well-Being. To round out the morning, Claudie Perreault will present on Preparing for Transition.After lunch, John Hannaford will set out his views on Shaping Canada’s International Trade. Prior to being named Deputy Minister of International Trade at Global Affairs Canada in January 2019, John was at PCO for seven years as Foreign and Defense Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister, and previously as Assistant Secretary for foreign and defense policy. Following the break, Bob Hamilton will speak on Steering the Canada Revenue Agency. Bob has been Commissioner of the Revenue Agency since August 2016. Previously he was Deputy Minister successively at Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
