My Forbidden Face Chapter Writing and Activities
1. Chapter One - Choose three scenes to illustrate. These scenes should be the size of a full sheet of paper and in color. They also need a caption taken from the text for each scene. Be sure to focus your images on the main action of this chapter or the main tone.
2. Chapter Two – Create a found poem for this chapter. Examine the example in class. Your found poem should be at least 16 lines lone. Each stanza should be divided into four lines, a quatrain. Begin each quatrain with a line from the text itself.
3. Chapter Three - Write a letter to Latifa encouraging her to continue through her situation. Make at least three direct references to the text. This letter should be at least a page in length.
4. Chapter Four - Journal entry – Reflect on the purpose of education. What role does education serve in your life? Why do people receive an education? What does it mean to have free and equal education for all? What will happen to a culture by limiting a specific group’s education? How will this play out in My Forbidden Face?
5. Chapter Five – Narrative – This chapter is full of flashbacks explaining how Latifa has grown and changed. In a narrative, explain how you yourself have grown and changed over the last several years. This should be a page long. Explain how you were before, what specifically changed you, and how you are now different.
6. Chapter Six – Song analysis – Find the lyrics of a song that you know that captures the mood and tone of this chapter. Print out/copy the lyrics and find at least five places in the song that connect to specific lines from the text. Be sure to write these down.
7. Chapter Seven – End – Journal entry – What is freedom? How does Latifa achieve freedom? How is her freedom still limited? Compare this to the freedoms you have here in the United States. Do freedoms here change?
