“Choose a song” Alphabet Tiles

Preparation:

Print out alphabet tiles on your computer onto colored cardstock. Cut into individual squares.

MUSIC MIKE

Junior primary:

(This is like hangman, only opposite) Draw a simple face on the board. Include a round circle for the face, two ears, two eyes, one nose, one mouth and three straight, vertical lines for hair. Everyone works together as a team. Choose a child or a teacher to pick a letter tile. Announce the sound of the letter to the rest of the children. They then try to figure out a primary song that has a word that starts with that particular letter. Example: the letter chosen is ‘R’. Different words starting with ‘R’ could be, repent, repentance, rain, rest, right, etc. When a child figures out a song that contains a word starting with that letter, the whole primary sings it and then you erase one part of the face. I started with the hair. The kids thought it was hysterical when Music Mike went bald! Challenge them, in the beginning, to wipe that guy right off the board! If the song chosen has the word in the title, tell them you’ll erase two features! It’s “beat the clock” time to see if they can erase Mike before singing time is over.

TILE TITLES

Senior primary:

Split into two teams. Each team tries to get the most points. Points are awarded as follows:

1 pt.: Word located anywhere in the song

2 pts.: Word located in the title of the song

5 pts.: First word (not including ‘the’ or ‘a’) in the title of the song

It’s a race for each team to choose a word for each tile drawn. Example: the letter ‘O’ is chosen. Team 2 comes up with “Oh, Come With Me to Primary” and receives 5 points (1st word in the title) and Team 1 is a little slower – they can’t choose the same song, so it’s best to be first - but comes up with “Love One Another”. Team 1 gets 2 points. Now everyone sings BOTH songs. You could also award bonus points for everyone on the team singing, knowing all the words, etc. (Use a presidency member to watch them as they sing.)
